This is a very interesting rifle. To me, that proce seems good though I would want more than one shot at extremely dangerous game.

I like the 300 yd long range sight for a 600NE, sorta like lobbing bolling balls at elephants.

I read that all of the post Gibbs Farquharsons sold by Holland and others were actually made be either Francotte or one of Francotte's subcontractors.

Back in the 60's and 70's Les Bauska of Kalispel Montana was having oversized Ruger #1 Actions cast and was making .577 and .600 nitro rifles with them. When I was in his shop in 1975, I kinda recall seeing an as-cast action, but can't be sure. Might only have been a picture. There were no finished rifles in his shop.
Does anyone here know anyone who has one?

George Gibbs Bristol Farquharson Falling Block Metford's Patent 48 Bore Rifle
https://hindmanauctions.com/auctions/6312-arms-armor-and-militaria/lot/229

48 Bore. 28" barrel length. SN: 12815. Action number 494. Blued metal restored finish to the barrel with case colored frame and small parts set in walnut semi-pistol grip stock with horn buttplate and forend cap featuring fine bordered multipoint checkering to wrist and forend. Single shot falling block Farquharson action rifle with safety lever to the right frame with blued retaining latch. Item mounts two position rear notch and front blade sights atop an oblong flat top barrel with sling loops to toe and forward barrel. Stock mounts a silver oval plate inscribed with the name W. S./Tyler/Jr.. Frame is richly engraved with best quality English Rose and Scroll engraving with floral bouquets enclosing the maker marking GEORGE GIBBS/BRISTOL. Upper right frame is further marked FARQUHARSON'S/PATENT/494. Item displays Birmingham proof marks to major parts with the underside of the barrel additionally marked 494-1333-12815 with 48 bore mark flanked by Birmingham proof marks. Rifle features Metford pattern rifling throughout. Majority of screw heads are engraved. Second to last known example of a Gibbs rifle with the rounded underlever catch.

Holland & Holland Farquharson Rifle
https://hindmanauctions.com/auctions/6312-arms-armor-and-militaria/lot/238

.375" Caliber (likely Flanged). 27.75" barrel length. SN: 28078. Blued metal finish with case colored frame and polished breechblock set in replaced walnut semi-pistol grip stock with cheek pad to left butt and horn forend cap and buttplate. Single shot falling block Farquharson style Holland & Woodward action mounting express sight with three leaves regulated for 100, 200, and 300 yards paired with a front bead sight on top of a matted sight ramp. Flanks of the frame are engraved HOLLAND/&/HOLLAND within engraved borders with English spiral scroll borders to the frame and wheat chaff engraved borders to tangs, triggerguard, lever, and upper and lower frame. Engraving does not match the pattern typically encountered on Holland & Holland actions, suggesting it was completely redone. Barrel address reads HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. Top of the frame and the rear sight base are both matted, and the safety lever is finely checkered and engraved with gold inlaid SAFE marking. Stock features a horn buttplate and both the barrel and butt are fitted with sling loops. Barrel and frame lack British firing proofs, suggesting the restoration was carried out outside of the United Kingdom. Rear breechblock retains a crisp {Crown/V} London viewing marking. Toe of the stock fitted with a silver oval plate that is unsigned. Takedown lever has been shortened or replaced. Serial number data matches a rifle that originally left Holland & Holland in .303 caliber. A rifle in this caliber with this serial number appears in Wal Winfer's "British Single Shot Rifles: Volume V, Holland & Holland", suggesting that the serial number of this lot was most likely applied when it was rebuilt.

Beautiful - 48 bore is .460". What ctg. would the Gibbs be chambered for?

The 461 Gibbs is a strange looking BN cartridge with the bottle neck about half way down the cartridge.

Beautiful examples both!
What is the small slide in the Gibbs?

The slide is to secure the safety lever in place - sort of like a little locking lever on a top tang safety - same concept.

When I look at the shape of the 461 Gibbs case my mind wonders what the designers were thinking. What were their concerns with ballistics, both interior and exterior, and case forming/manufacturing, then loading/extraction and maybe even cleaning. Fun to go back in time and just noddle. Thanks Daryl for sharing

Interesting the Holland has no proof marks on the barrel or the action. Does Australia require proof marks on restorations?

The Gibbs No.2 case is really just the No.1 with a .4" longer neck - all else in the case design being the same.
A longer neck = more powder capacity although the No.2 loads were generally 10grs more in powder charge for each respective bullet weight.

Never seen one of those before, an extra safety as you will!
Both beautiful examples of gunmakers art.
Wonderful that you explain these things to mugs like me, that's what makes this forum so good!
Thanks again mate

No proof marks required in Australia for anything.

Lot Description
*George Gibbs Farquharson's Patent Small Frame Match Rifle with Side Cocking, Detachable Action and Tang Sight Published in Walter Winfer's "British Single Shot Rifles"

.36 Cal. 28.625" barrel length. SN: 10409. Action Number 363. Blued metal finish with case colored frame mounting walnut semi pistol grip stock with fine bordered multipoint checkering to wrist and forend, and horn pistol grip cap and buttplate. Single shot falling block Farquharson action rifle featuring an octagonal barrel mounting windage adjustable fully hooded front blade, two position middle notch, and folding Vernier sight to tang. Maker mark to left frame reads GEORGE GIBBS/BRISTOL with the right struck FARQUHARSON'S/PATENT/363. Barrel address reads METFORD'S PATENT, 1115. GEORGE GIBBS, 29, CORN STREET, BRISTOL. A matching number 1115 is struck into the underside of the barrel. Sights are the original Metford Match pattern with a matching action number of 363, and a hooded adjustable front sight with No. 11 pin. Rifle features an unsigned silver oval plate to the toe, and fine second quality Birmingham style English scrollwork adorning the frame. Scroll embellishments include wheat chaff borders to the lever and trigger guard, spiral scroll surrounding floral bouquets on the frame flanks, and a cornucopia with apples to the right. Rifle features a cocking lever to the right side that displays matching engraving and fine checkering. All screw heads are engraved with sunbursts. Breechblock, left frame and barrel are struck with Birmingham firing proof markings. Octagonal barrels typically appear on Gibbs Rook rifles, suggesting the caliber may be .360 Rook, but the caliber is not marked on the barrel. Its small size suggests this rifle may have been originally built for a woman or a boy. This very rifle appears in Wal Winfer's "British Single Shot Rifles, the Gibbs Farquharson: Volume II", though the barrel number is listed as the serial number, rather than the number engraved into the rear triggerplate, though the action numbers and configuration are a complete match. The photos were provided to Winfer by the late John T. Amber, suggesting this rifle may have once been part of his world renowned collection. {MODERN}
