Very Nice!

Certainly would prefer the forward sling-swivel position on your version, Joel!

BTW I find the MS bolt easy to operate with a little practice, placing the thumb firmly on the bolt-handle root before lifting. If you do this, they are virtually as fast to operate, even at the shoulder, as a bolt knob.

The swept-back butter-knife of later models (demanded by Stoeger?) completely stuffs this up, of course! As does an incorrectly-mounted scope.

All that said, I'd love a .458 like the one pictured.

I have always liked the MS. I also find the bolt fairly easy to operate. Tony, I believe that your comment about putting your thumb on top of the bolt is the right way to operate a spoon bolt.

there is an old rumor some Mannlicher Schönauer were made in 9,3x57 for sweden back in the days and here is one.
https://www.waffengebraucht.at/waffen/re...l-93x57--590485
I don't know if real and when real new or old. the seller is a gunmaker form the sodia family, will send him a mail about it.

again a Haenel Model 1900 in 8x57I mislabeled as "Mannlicher Schönauer" https://www.waffengebraucht.at/waffen/re...schiene--590282

thats rare, a MS in 8x60 Magnum https://www.waffengebraucht.at/waffen/repetiererbuechse/mannlich-schoenauer-8x60-magnum--513781

after a long time I got an answer about the MS in 9,3x57 above from mister Sodia in austria. was indeed a MS 1910 in 9,5x56 with a worn out barrel before, maybe because of cordite ammo.
anyway, got a new barrel in 9,3x57 so we see again its no problem.

Glad you had an answer back Lancaster - appears you were right all along!
Back now in original form (if not original barrel) so back for reproof & off hunting again?

this is what its looks, the barrel get's the original contour and proof is mandatory. its all about the norma 9,3x57 factory load why this caliber was chosen. this rifle here allready sell over christmas+new year.
I read it more than once that some MS where rebored in sweden before the war for the popular 9,3x57. maybe possible with a 9x56MS barrel but never realy find such a rifle till now.

well, Kal. 6,5 Norm(al) must be 6,5x54 MS because this is the most schönauer cartridge at all.
wonder why it was not easier then to stamp it "6,5x54".

I was told that it was because the Germans invaded Austria in 1938 and made them change the way the caliber was marked.

I would have expected a 1903 Mannlicher to have "Made in Austria" and "M.1903" on the Receiver ring, rather than "Made in Germany" and "Kal;6.5NORM".

When did they change it?

Technically it is still a M1903 with a high 03 serial number 25680. Merely the inscriptions were changed due to the political and legal changes. After the “Anschluss” in 1938 Austria was regarded as a part of Germany until 1945. So the origin was changed to “Made in Germany” in 1938 at serial number about 253xx. Then, from 1940 on, the then new German proof law prescribed any gun had to be marked with the designation of the cartridge it used. So the former “Model 1903” for any 6.5x54 M-Sch cartridge was insufficient. The Steyr factory now marked their 6.5x54 M03 rifles with “Kal:6,5NORM(normal)” to distinguish them from other 6.5 mm cartridges. M03 production ended during WW2 at serial number about 257xx. This rifle is a bona fide Model 1903 Stutzen, made near the end of production between 1940 – 1945.

Very rare bird indeed to be actually made during WW2!

My (Grand - Dad's) 1910 MS Takedown wears a Gerard B with the three point reticle, yet with thicker lines.

These are from 1939 Stoeger:
