Cheap, knockabout, double
      #228902 - 17/04/13 10:50 AM

Thinking about an inexpensive double in 45-70, for hogs ,so I can fall in the mud and not worry. Advise?
Thanks, Doug

What do you class as "inexpensive" ???

Sabatti

But check that it has an X in the serial number.

Yeah, Sabatti, TGA Kodiak, possibly 12 ga SxS slug, open to suggestions! Mind you, this is as much for discussion as anything else! So-- $3k?, or the least possible expense! At one time I had a Stevens 311 that had been shortened by about 1", so the chokes were opened some- shot foster style slugs in a paper plate at 100. Sold this for $200, and was happy. Dang!!

Least possible would be the Remington / Baikal
in 45/70

That would be your best bet and hope you
get a shooter or one that can be regulated
so it does shoot.

No, that's not an option. Have handled these--- Understand, I have a couple of fine doubles, and really don't want to deal with trash. I'm thinking about something that is not garbage, but interesting!

Understand.

Then IMHO, Sabatti it is.

Good! Opinion is what I'm after! Aware of the Sabatti issues. I don't want to limit this to 45-70, just is easy and inexpensive to shoot, but am looking for an alternative to hauling the Thomas Turner thru the swamp!

So, let's say less than 75 yards, with an accuracy of about 8". Guess that will do.

Have you considered a drilling with slugs? Most of my drillings will meet your accuracy requirements with Brenneke slugs. If one is patient, a very nice one can still be had for around $2,500. I've found the slugs option to be quite fun on hogs!

As you're in the market for opinions, let me offer this:

I long ago realized a "knock about" was something that sounded good early on in my journey with fine and/or vintage guns, but ultimately I discovered they just didn't interest me. I'd take out something of a "knock about" on a rough hunt, only to wish I would have brought the Paton or the Alexander Henry, or the Dickson, etc. Interesting guns interest me, and make my hunt more fun.

I duck hunt in the sloughs of eastern Arkansas with a Premier Grade W.C. Scott 10b, or a Greener 3" 12b, and if it were legal I would have a certain E.M. Reily 8 bore with me. The hunting is tough, messy, ugly work with decoys, dogs, and rednecks all jumping through the muck and the mud. That being said, I take the proper English approach and have re-browned the barrels, and the stock is properly re-oiled every few years in my shop by my own hand.

Many of my guns have nicks and dings in them from previous owners who enjoyed them prior to my acquisition. During restoration work I rarely remove these. I know each and every one of them was placed there during the pursuit of an enjoyable hunt. And while I take very good care of my guns and rifles, I plan to add a few of my own before passing them on their way to new homes.

How well do these vintage guns hold up under steel shot? I have always been reluctant to subject my older guns to the (idiotic) federally dictated loads.

xausa,

I don't run steel shot through them. I still have a good supply of Bismuth for reloading the 10 bores, a flat of Kent Tungsten-Matrix for my 3" 12 bores, and am going to start experimenting with the reloading of NICE shot very soon. The Kent Tungsten-Matrix performs incredibly well in my experience.
