Lyon & Lyon .500 3" BPE
      #227885 - 02/04/13 10:24 PM

I just got this rifle on trade. Lyon & Lyon .500 3" BPE. I traded my A Hartman .577 with which I was not pleased. This rifle hits all the buttons in my book; high grade hammerless, big bore, light weight (8.5lbs), 28" steel barrels, light recoil, and very accurate(sub 2").

The best I can reckon is it was made by W&C Scott sometime from 1895-1905.

I really like those Webley hammerless BPE rifles. They just look right and seem to handle well although I have just held a couple and never shot one. Congrats!
It is just begging for a good NfB load and should be just the thing for North American game from pigs to Elk/Moose.
Is a .500BPE considered adequate for Brown Bear?

The current load from the previous owner is 365 grain flat point, 53gr. H4198 for an average velocity of 1798 fps with 17 fps SD.

He supplied 4 test rounds and my first pair at 50 yards (R/L) was 1.5" and the second pair( R/L) was 0.5". I must have flinched on the first

One odd fact is it must use .509 projectiles. Montana Precision Swaging will do that for free so I ordered 100 bullets from him.

He says it shoots 425s well also. He's going to send me all his load data and some more accouterments.

Regarding Brown Bear, some accounts have the Brown Bear as the most cunning and dangerous game; and if I were ever to have that opportunity I'd bank my ass with no less than my .376 Styer.

A 365gr. FP at 1,800fps would work just fine with good placement.

If the 425's shot same speed and regulated, I'd use those instead.

Congratulations! I think the .500 Express is a wonderful cartridge. Very useful and pleasant to shoot.

Very nice - W&C Scott, (or maybe Webley & Scott if later) made many if not most of the better double rifles of the time retailed by many "gunmakers"

I call them Lever locked forends.

I think it might be Lever Release
(as opposed to Anson release or
the Deeley Release).

Nice looking rifle Bonanza!
I use the 425's from a Lyman mold with my various 500's and they work great. 8 1/2 is a good weight for a 500 Express.
It'll work well for a brownie too.
Enjoy it!

I've heard them called a Rigby type release.
