The two .475 No2’s which to prefer?
      #227824 - 01/04/13 10:39 PM

Which of the two versions the Eley or the Jeffrey would you prefere and why?

As far as I understand the Jeffrey version uses .488” 500 grains bullets and the Eley version uses .483” 480 grains bullets?

Are they both regulated for 2150 fps or is the also variation between the versions in this concern? John Taylor states that the Jeffrey version only delivers 2000 fps?

Is the case the same or has the Jeffrey version reinforcements?

Please let me know what you know and think of the two versions.

DvK

Nobody seems to care about this topic !

This cartridge has caused some confusion in the late . Why there are two different cartridges with the same name on the market , nobody know this today . Mistake between the two cartridges are sure and a significant problem formerly at the time of order ammo from Europe to Africa .

Imho , this cartridge is today a little bit marginal . I don't see a advantage if you compare it with a 470NE . If you like bigger , take a 500NE , you are sure , it's a .510 !

A propos Velocity , don't forget that the cartridges has been tested oftens with 28" barrels . Added to this , Jeffery was always on the safe side and reduced the loads . It would seem so that overpressure in tropical area was a obsession by this trader .

I don't know the answer of the question which to prefer !

If you want a DR 475 N°2 NE , in a first time you have to buy a DR caliber 475 N°2 NE and in a second time to look what do you have purchased , Jeffery or Eley ?

It may be easier to get 475 No.2 Eley ammo.
I have bought it in Denmark, Germany and England and have only once seen a
box of 475 No. 2 Jeffery.

If the gun fits and is what you like, either.

I have been told by those who have used them that
both cartridges work well.

Whatever you shoot with either will not know the difference

Lets say - I know there are other (maeby even better) catrdriges on the marked - you would build a new double?
Which would you then go for? If the rifle was build by Jeffrey then I know the answer...

If you read Tony Sanchez-Arino latest book "Great African Calibers" you will see that he has every confidence in this caliber, which came about for two reasons,1, Because there was a British ban on all cartridges of .45 caliber in India, and Africa. 2, to reduce the chamber pressure in tropical climates, which this cartridge certainly does. there have been a number of proffesional hunters who have "kept the faith" with this cartridge over the years,it is still available in both versions, and I have never had any problems in aquiring cartridges,or components to load my own.My preference is for the .500 Grn Jeffery version, which at 2150fps produces 5000 FtLbs at the muzzle, enough for anything on earth, and it can be loaded up to higher velocity in a Falling Block action without the problem of regulation.Buy one. Use it.You will not be disappionted!
Chris,
France.
