Norma 7x57R and 8x57JRS, where is it available
      #226701 - 10/03/13 02:02 AM

Finalizing my double rifle purchase and now caliber selection is the issue. ammunition availability is my primary concern. I gave up reloading a while ago but that doesn’t mean I won’t start up again when I have more time.

1. I am a dealer with FFL so purchasing isn’t an issue.
2. I am looking for sources of either 7x57R or 8x57JRS by Norma.
3. availability may determine cal. of rifle I am ordering.
for whatever reason, there doesn’t seem to be any of either for sale anywhere.

I am going to purchase a Chapuis Series 3 and the 30-30 looks very inviting but the 7x57R and 8x57 JRS just have more performance. The rifle will be used primarily for whitetails.

I want off the shelf performance. From what I am gathering form reading posts and reviews, the S&B ammo is okay for practice but the bullets aren’t constructed that well and tend to blow apart.
Thoughts on any of this are appreciated.

In Scandinavia and Europe the 7x57R and 8X57IRS are very popular, 30-30 is a very rare bird.

USA retailers:

Columbia, MO - Midway USA
Mexico, MO - Graf & Sons, Inc.
Montezuma, IA - Sinclair International, Inc.
Oroville, CA - Huntington
Rapid City, SD - Black Hills Shooters Supply

FWIW - speaking of S&B "regular" bullets - such as SPCE, you'd be surprised how many game is shot here with those - those are non-premium - plain jane - cup&core, rather soft - tho I wouldn't (didn't - my father was shooting those for 2 decades and I started my hunts with those) mind using them according to their capabilities. They lack on hardest quartering shots on big stags, bears and boars - work splendid (without exit on big stags, bears and boars shot on the shoulder) on side shots. Should do just fine on Whitetails IMO.

On the other hand S&B does load Nosler Partition for mentioned calibers - see here:

There's also the Privi partizan line up and based on the 9.3X74R bullets, I think they are also well constructed cup and core. They work fine for moose.

I have 7x57 and 8x57 magazine rifles. No need for premium projectiles in those either. Conventional contruction projectiles work superbly in mine on all size animals.

For reloading, I believe normal dies will work, you just need a rimmed shell holder.

Don't forget RWS ammo if available in the USA. I have found it to be of superb quality and accuracy. Equal or better than my handloads. You pay $$$ for them though. Cheap if you can afford a double.

I'm pretty sure I have a set of RCBS 7x57R dies. I think they're kind of scarce, but I could turn loose of them if anyone needs them. I don't know about shooting rimless dimensioned cases in the Rimmed chamber, but these dies did not fully size rimless cases for use in a rimless chamber - the bolt was hard to close, so the Rimmed chamber must be slightly larger at some point.

Just for an FYI Kebco (Keb Bush)has a bunch of 6.5X57R,7X57R and the 8X57R stuff in stock now.
It's the S&B brand at $15 a box.

Brain ,
Glad to know you have narrowed your choice . I load my 7X57R with a regular 7X57 dies and a rimmed shell holder. I have done some limited hunting with mine loaded with the 160 grain Nosler . It is a real killer !!!!! Think you will like it . Let me know when you get it .
Robert
