New to me BSA Lee Speed
      #226504 - 06/03/13 02:04 PM

About a week or so ago I traded into a later model Lee Speed type rifle minus the Speed name which I have learned means the rifle was produced after the patents expired in or around 1910 to 1914 according to those smarter than I. Any information that can be given/shared to help me identify this rifle and posibily the year of manufacture would be appreciated. One person I talked to placed this rifle in the 1906 production year but again I cannot confirm. The rifle does have BSA markings but other things I have determined is the forestock is a replacement from a SMLE and the rifle I think has been rebarreled at some point with what I was told was a MkI military barrel. Other than that it seems tight, it passes headspace checks and the bore cleaned up well. I was also told the barrel is reversed tapered and so that is new to me and I continue to learn Lee Enfield stuff everyday.

Beautiful rifle! I have a severe weakness for the Lee Speed rifles and consider myself fortunate to own one!

Well, I'm the current custodian of the Lee Speed - thanks, Derek!

Very interesting rifle. A few things stand out to me ...

1. The handgrip radius seems much tighter than other Lee Speeds shown on this site. I have to wonder whether it isn't a replacement as well?
2. There aren't any markings on the rear of the receiver. The other BSA I've found has BSA stamped in the "normal" location. There is a "nitro-proved" stamp on the top of the barrel however.
3. As Derek mentioned, the fore-stock is a replacement from an SMLE.

Haven't shot it yet, but a .312 bullet will enter the muzzle pretty much all the way - could that be Metford rifling? If so, what might be the approach to getting it to shoot?

Metford rifling wouldn't be found on a Number 1 replacement barrel. Can you post clear pics of the markings on the barrel's underside?
