My first double, 450-400
      #225964 - 26/02/13 03:02 AM

I just picked up my first double rifle, a Chapuis 450-400 with 25 inch tubes. I had a 1-6x24 Leupold VX6 Illuminated mounted in Chapuis mounts. That's the good news, the bad news is I really know nothing about doubles. I'm from northern Alberta but I work in NYC now, I've been loading and shooting singles and bolts since I was 13 but other then reading about them I've never really handled a double until now.

I have a bunch of questions and I thought I'd try the Socratic method and just start asking questions and reley on the kindness of strangers so to speak.

Thanks in advance for being patient with a total newby.

1. Which trigger do I pull first?
2. What type of sling, if any, do I use? I was thinking about a Galco safari Ching sling.
3. It's regulated with Hornady ammo. Is there well know load data to replicate it?
4. What kind of ammo carrier works well with this caliber and set up?
5. Is there a factory crimp die for this caliber.
6. Screw drivers and tools, what should I buy?
7. Is there anything that everyone knows and very first timer should know before they get in deep?

Thanks guys,

Rell

Welcome to the Forum.
The first thing that you need to know is that the Chapuis is a fine rifle.
Did you have it regulated with the scope?
Pull the front trigger 1st. Hook it with your first knukle. not the tip.
Lee probably makes a crimp die. I use the regular dies myself, if I bother to crimp.
There's good loads available from Graeme Wrights book,"Shooting the British Double Rifle". A must have book.

It's regulated with the iron sights at 50m. I have fired 12 rounds with the iron. 6 in one target and 6 in another. Perfect left to right and about an inch high ( maybe me). All are within 2.5 inches.

The scope at 100 yards shoots right and left about 2 inches apart at 200 yards they are still about 2 inches. I only had 8 rounds which the scope.
