458 Win Mag velocities - Factory Ammo in Ruger No1

The following are the results from an entire box of twenty cartridges factory loaded by Winchester Super X with their 510gn soft point bullet.

The tests were conducted using TWO chronographs placed one in front of the other at 8 feet from the muzzle and 30 feet from the muzzle respectively.

The test was carried out on the 7th October 2000 in England using my own Tropical No.1 which was built in the mid 1980's.

The recordings were as follows:

column two calculated energy at 8ft in ft/lbs
column three remaining velocity at 30ft in feet/sec
column four calculated remaining energy at 30ft in ft/lbs

SUMMARY
mean velocity at 8ft 2023 feet/sec
mean calculated energy at 8ft 4661 ft/lbs

mean velocity at 30ft 2000 feet/sec
mean calculated energy at 30ft 4553 ft/lbs

Standard deviation for 8 and 30 feet is 20.5 fps. Not bad.

That is plenty of velocity to get the job done, but I wouldn't want any less...
