I see many hunters going to Africa to hunt lions, ie male lions as trophies.
When I first hunted in Zimbabwe the PH said they preferred to hunt lionesses and I noticed they were cheaper on the trophy rates list too.
Also I note many or actually almost all lion hunters are coming home empty handed. At least those posting stories on the net.
Does anyone hunt lionesses as opposed to lions?
Why or why not?
Is it taboo?
Is the likelihood of success much higher than for males?
Some discussion points.

As lioness and leopardess apparently go off hunting or for whatever reason are separated at times from little cubs, not sure how to differentiate between them and mothers with weaned cubs.
Just can't see taking the chance. They get harrassed enough as it is. But I speak for myself only.

I am probably in the minority but I think there is no prettier animal in all Africa than a sleek well fed Lioness. In contrast MOST males I've seen are really scruffy. I saw 2 lioness's in Hwange a couple of years ago that were magnificent. I have tried for 5 years for a lioness but now with the moratorium in Zim I will probably never take one. So be it.

Will,
The reasoning behind the PH's comments was to shoot a lioness means more cubs survive. ie if a pride dominant male was shot, a new male would take over and kill all the cubs so shooting a female meant more cubs survive.
Zimhunter,
Its like that isn't it. You want a female and you see males. Other guys hunt for a lion and see only immature ones and lionesses.

I recently had the good fortune to take a beautiful lioness on my last safari in Zimbabwe. It just happened that one became available on quota (which is strictly monitored) so I obviously spoke up.
My PH, who has quite a bit of experience, prefers to hunt lioness over their male counterparts. He thinks they're more alert, aggressive & overall more exciting to hunt. I can personally verify the exciting part!! However I have never hunted the males to compare this part.
As luck would have it, I had my Lancaster 450/400 NE Double with me when we spotted the pair of lioness' in the tall grass. We were able to stalk to about 45 yards, primarily because they were preoccupied with a group of cow elephant & their calves on their other side. My adrenal glands were in high gear at this point
She was actually a large lioness, 22 1/2" skull, with quite worn canines. My PH felt she was on the downhill side of her career & not long from becoming dinner for a mob of hyena.
For me, stalking that lioness in tall grass with a 1911 Lancaster Double on a cool African morning created a memory that won't fade quickly. I highly recommend it to everyone!!

All your reasoning and that of cowboy may be true, but would you not agree that a male lions trophy is much more impressive than a females?

Igbal,
Indeed a 6 x 6 bull elk makes a better appearance over a fireplace than a "spike" or a "cow elk". But there is a lot more into a trophy than that.
To me a trophy is the the entire experience, the amount of time regulating, reloading, packing, planning, hiking, sweating & the actual hunt itself.
I feel a "lioness" can make a spectacular African trophy & a great hunt, anyway it did for me!

I personally do not wish to hunt any of the female species, but I have no problem with anyone else doing so or doing it myself if it needs to be done...
I only care about shooting male Lions and big tusker elephants and buffalo with bit bosses...
I will shoot a female for camp meat or if they need to be culled, but its not my thing..

Yes I would much rather hunt a nicely maned lion as well. But I think a really cool mount oneday would be a full mounted lion and lioness.
Still need to hunt either of them, so MAY keep an open mind to which comes first.
Some of the lion trophies taken really are not that spectacular with poor shabby manes. Not saying the hunts themselves were not worth it and to me the hunt is the true value of the trophy in the end anyway.

I wouldn't have any problem shooting a lioness.
