45-70 black powder barrel
      #225790 - 23/02/13 03:36 AM

I picked up a partialy finished custom rifle built on an original RB #1 action at a gun show few years ago. It was in the white, shootable and only needed a rear sight. The barrel is a new 45/70 tapered octagon 30 inches long, I don't know the manufacturer. The forearm was attatched with a single wedge, like many muzzle loaders are (Hawken style). When I got home I dissassembled the rifle and found that the wedge key was cut to go through a square slot in the barrel. This leaves a barrel thickness of about .100 at the key slot, it is 7 inches from the breech. I only shoot(REAL) black powder, would this be thick enough for black powder loads? Thanks, Ed

I don't see why not, Ed - but?

The pressure posted using a 500gr. bullet and 70gr. of 2F (I think it was) according to Accurate Arms Powder company, 22,000psi.

If the slot was closer to the breech, or a larger case used as in the 30,000 psi producing 3 1/4" .45 case, I'd be more concerned, I think.

I'd mail Dan Pharris and ask what he though on this subject.

Not knowing the make of the barrel is not particularly good imho.

In his book "Hatcher's Notebook" pages 101-2, General Hatcher described a test he made with regard to chamber wall thickness. He had the barrel of a Springfield rifle turned down until the chamber wall thickness was 1/8" (.125") and fired it with regular and high pressure (75,000 lbs/sq./in) cartridges. This produced no visible results, so he proceded to have the barrel turned down to the point that the chamber walls were only 1/16" thick (.0625"). The barrel was unaffected by regular service cartridges, but a 75,000 lbs/sq./in. cartridge blew a piece out of the side of the chamber. He remarked that since the thickness of the regular barrel over the chamber is 5/16" "it is plainly evident that the strength should be sufficient."
