H&R slug master misfire
      #225775 - 22/02/13 04:21 PM

Hi

i took my slug master out for a shot last week and it would not fire just put little dents in the primer.
the same loads as the last time i used it with no misfire i have been reading on the net that the
transfer bar is a bit crud and will cause misfire.h&r has a new one to replace the old one so i got my gun shop looking into this for me .

has any one else had this happen to them and if so how did you fix it

thanks
matthew

I had the biggest buck I ever saw in front of me at 80 yards. Slowly I brought up the gun and pulled the trigger.... made a little dent in the primer. Cried for a week and had always attributed it to Federal ammunition, then switching to Hornady. Interesting

As with most shotguns NEFs have generous headspace.
So I check the firing protrusion on all NEF guns I have
as well as all other guns of any kind. Some NEFs only protrude about .040"
and all shotguns need .060" at least. So on NEF I file off
back of breech stop so that hammer pushes the transfer bar
further forward shoving pin out further.

Also guns that have a light primer dent with some cases
I have, will indent better with Hornady cases as I measured them
with about .005" extra rim thickness. But you don't want to
put up with short firing pin protrusion when it can be fixed.Ed

A friend has this same problem and he replaced the firing pin. He did it himself and said it was a real tough job. he is not a gunsmith, just average guy. From what he said, sounds like he had heard of it also happen to another friend. So; while not common, it apparently does happen that the firing pin is just to short? I could give him a call and ask, that is the general idea what he told me.

Actually, it could be the chamber as stated above, but a workable fix was a new firing pin. I think his was a cf rifle.

now, NEF is part of Remington and I guess service really stinks. But, his gun was not from Remington anyway, as far as I know. The Remington/NEF had other problems, like scope rail popping off. And they dont like to talk on the telephone. probably not about to service the NEF guns. And if they did it could take months. Your are from Australia, so maybe not relevant I live just down from the old NEF (H&R) factory. You could walk right in the door and ask them to build a gun.

Hope this helps, ... If I see him, I will ask again. I dont think it was the transfer bar. Now, I wish I payed better attention.

Sometimes new pin I've gotten is like old pin; IE same length.
Only fiddled around like that twice. And only easy fix, file back of
breech to get enough protrusion.Ed
