8.73" is actually nominally 7 bore, but the bore would be closer to the .835" of a true 8 bore.

Daryl,
Correct indeed…….the Lewis is a “brass case” rifle hence the larger bore/groove diameter.
Paper case rifles were on the order of ~.835” whilst brass case rifles were of a larger actual bore maybe ~.845”-.855” (~.875”in the groove) due to the thinner case mouth and resulting slightly larger ball/bullet diameter to fit said brass case.
The rifles were typically referred as to “bore” based upon the usual overall shotshell dimensions -vs- actual true bore diameter. The original buyer was expected to know whether his rifle was a brass case or paper case version.
Given the use of a round ball I’d imagine either type ammo would function safely (maybe not accurately?) in either type bore or chamber.

Along that line, I had a Husky M20, I think it was, that used a 16 bore paper case in the left, smooth barrel and a 16 bore brass case in the right, straight rifled barrel with a 13 bore (actual .705" 13 1/2bore) ball.
The larger bore, if used with a paper or plastic with shot, produced very nicely even cylinder patterns at 25 yards, perfect for rising birds. The smooth bore had an improved modified choke.

Wow, if that is a 4 bore, a 2 bore must look like a water main.

Curly, I also wouldn't want to shoot it but wouldn't mind watching some brave person shoot it.
