380 grain in .375, penetration vs. .458 / 500 gr.
      #22510 - 22/12/04 12:04 PM

I've been thinking...given the higher sectional density of a 380 grain .375 as compared to a 500 grain .458, wouldn't the .375 penetrate better with a similar muzzle velocity?
I think the advantage in sectional density is 13% in favor of the .375, while the .458 has a 32% advantage in weight. I understand that the increased weight would equate to more momentum but wouldn't that be offset by the relatively smaller frontal profile and resulting decreased resistance of the .375?
Just a thought.

I'd venture to say that it all depends on what your intended victim is. On the largest stuff, I'd prefer a bigger hole going in and out.

A famous hunting writer once said "On DG the three most important factors are caliber, caliber, and caliber". Take it or leave it.

BTW:
Where the hell do you get 380gr .375 bullets?

Rhino makes both 350 and 380 grain bullets and the right load should reach 2250 fps with a 380. Certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Calculate the Penetration Index and find out!

PI = (KE)(SD)/(100 Af)

where KE is bullet knitic energy, in ft-lb, (MV^2/7000(2G))
G=32.17
V= bullet velocity in fps,
M= bullet mass in grains
SD = sectional density
Af = bullet cross-sectional area

The 380 gr. even at 2250 probably has a greater PI than the 500gr. 458, which isn't too whippy in the first place.

you can have all the SD in the world, but you still have to drive the bullet fast enough to use all that sectional density, therefore the 500 gr. 458 will out penetrate the 380 gr. 375, at least in my tests...The 300 gr. 375 at a faster velocity, say 2500 FPS will come close to the 458 but not quite it seems.
