Rusty,

I think I remember the thread you are referring to, and If I am not mistaken the slings were from Westley Richards' website.

I have been really pleased with slings made by Riserva, which are linen and leather. I first found these products at the Antique Arm Show in Las Vegas two or three years ago. You can get them at this website:

SOG Arms

Note: the slings I bought were made for European swivels and are about 3/4" wide. They are perfect for German or Austrian rifles. If you have 1" swivels on your rifle make sure they have 1" slings.

The one I particularly like is #R6028, which you will find on the second webpage of the shotgun slings on that website. Again, the attachment is 3/4".

Best to you,

As I've posted before I like the ones sold by Cabelas. It was item # AL689-LAR webbing sling (extendable) seems they were under $20. The webbing is good the leather is first class and the brass fittings are cast brass. I have used these for 5 or 6 years now and if you are buying for use and not the name they can't be beat. They are not BRITISH but then my doubles are both German and my bolt guns are Czech and USA.

Sorry about Cabelas, it looks as if they no longer carry the sling. I believe they were Williams Bros. The number I gave was off the last new one I have. It's in the original package so I thought it would be the correct nuber. If they are not Williams they could be Mulholland. The ad used to give the manufacturer. Probably purchased a couple of years ago.

When standing in knee deep water and mud, with more of it from 80 metres to a couple of kilometres around us, I found a nice wide sling on a heavy double rifle quite handy.

Handy for hanging the rifle onto a tree when cutting up the buff.

Handy for carrying the rifle back when dragging the cape back and also carrying out other gear.

Handying for not falling face first into the mud and water when stepping into unexpected deeper holes in the wetlands.

Very handy.

I just bought one from New England Custom Gun Service, for $49,very good quality and worth the money! They also sell swivel loops if you want to change from a european to a more traditional 1" loop. You can order by phone (603)469-3450.

I have a leather one that slides over the two barrels and loops from the rear of the grip to the front of the comb..I carry it in my day pack or let the tracker carry it...Only use it when really needed..Hate a slung gun when I'm hunting the high grass! and it seems that is where I live in Africa

Rusty:

Did you end up getting a canvas sling? I just ordered the canvas sling from Westley Richards and I was wondering if your ordered the same one and if so, what your thoughts are about it.

Clark,
I have not. Please let me know how you like yours. I saw a couple of slings at DSC in the Empire Rifle booth, but they did not have the leather loop before the brass stud.

Rusty,

Why not have a try with the very comfortable neoprene Buttler Creek sling
neoprene sling from Cabelas.
I cannot do without it when I have to walk more than 10 km bearing my 10 pounds 375. The swivels are removed, instead I tie a leather cordon into the studs so as not to be detected by the clicking of the swivels. Sure the rifle is prone to jolt a bit along and it’s getting a bloody nuisance should you have to carry a cape or anything as NitroX said.
Usually I am keeping myself as far as possible from leather. In hunting conditions, leather is either soaked or dessicated and so looses most of it’s qualities.

I just ordered a 1 inch leather and canvas sling for my Wm . Evans 400/360 from Jeff's outfitters in Missouri (www.jeffsoutfitters.com) as well as the "classic" "swivel hooks and eyes" also 1 inch. It should look typical of the gear in use during the early 1900's and be great for "parading the rifle". In reality, from a compfort and practical stand point you can not beat the Butler Creek neoprene slings. They have a certain amount of "streach" built into them so that they cushion the weight of the rifle as you walk. As a result, the sling does not have the same tendency to dig into your shoulder. This makes it a much more compfortable sling to use when you have to carry any rifle, especially a heavy one. I now have one for most of my rifles (different colours). They also function well as a "hasty sling" because they are easier to get in and out of due to the streach factor. The underside of the neoprene pad also has small raised bumps which keep the sling from sliding off your shoulder. I will critique the canvas and leather sling when I get it.
