Early start to the season
      #224627 - 02/02/13 10:16 AM

Very early actually as I don't normally carry the rifle for a couple of months but I had seen a couple of young stags a few weeks ago while scouting and thought "why not" so i took my 7mm in case an opp arose while scouting last week.
January is bloody early too but a cooler arvo had me out there looking about,I hummed and haahed about the spikey but deemed him to be too much work on my own,but there was a hind with him and then 'voila' a calf of 150lbs live weight entered the scope field, bam!,fridge is full.

Hind on the green side, two hinds and a good calf were there but too far from my wheels.

A cast stag feeding on the dry side, all cornflakes and crunchy,I surprised myself even in getting the four pics I took on that noisy carpet.

The young spikey that moments earlier had a hind behind him then the calf was taken.

All up I was pleased in sighting seven sambar and the next night I was out and about and saw a young velvet stag a hind and calf and then a real thumper of stag in late velvet,he was with another that had some ugly thing growing out of his left side skull that could hardly be called an antler.
The thumper was a tad narrow but maybe accentuated by the loooong main beams that made his head look small.

Bugger! Last night I picked a dividing spur that deer use to travel on in the hope of getting pics of the velvet stag and after some time I heard a noise behind me and slowly turned and a calf was eyeballing me from 10 yards away,I sensed movement and adjusted my vision to the right and its mother was already on the move from the same distance. Its hard to believe a big hind (the pair) can walk through crunchy leaves so silently.

And since then Mick i saw another five and one of two stags together was a thumper of a stag in late velvet, his head (skull) looked too small for his antlers in fact.
And I should have mentioned up in the top post that its a 6 k gallop to get into where I took the pics, nothing comes too easy with them, well not often. I liked your latest boar too.

If only the horrible heat would disappear Drew a bloke might get out and about a bit more.

Driest January since 1932 on record.
