"The note printed back in the 1800's that I read, stated the bores appeared to be smooth, however in proper light, a slight twist could be observed in the bore's surface indicating they had invisible rifling."

What Daryl S wrote is exactly the best description
I have seen.

This looks very similar to the Whitworth patent bores of my Westley Richards 16bore rifle, which is complete with patent use stamps and all.
Definitely not any sort of invisible rifling.

Good looking bores though!

Link works fine.

Just need to have a close look at the proof marks.

It does say Shot as well as bullet.

Here is ball from the Westley Richards, they come out shaped as octagons.

MotelAlpha,
That is a very good looking set of rifles you have there! I especially love the looks of the Hollis, it is in amazing shape. The rifling type is interesting but the proof for me would be,how does it shoot? Bob

500Nitro, that is a nice photos, I will try that technique to see if the bore show better. ans to Birdhunter (Bob) I blame all of them on Capt.Curl, tinker, and 500Nitro since several years ago I found this sight, and got hooked...also growing up in the very early 50s watching several african and Indian theme TV shows...we got 2 channels then and all B&W
