      #22367 - 18/12/04 04:54 PM

HI,

I have never been to Africa yet, but if one only had a 416 Rigby to hunt all game with,DG and plains game, what bullet would do the job?Or anywhere else for that matter, ranges could be from 0 to 350 yards? Thanks,Kev

I'm hunting in Africa wiht a .416 Rigby, this an excellent calibre ( Impala to elephant). My favourite cartridge is the
Trophy Bonded bear claw of Federal,I shoot all animals with the bullet of 400 grains except elephant with a solid bullet
in 410 grains.
At soon (excuse me for the mistakes, I'm Belgian)

The 416 Rigby is a great round. How about using two different scopes in QR mounts? I had mine with a 1x4 Leupold and 410 Woodleighs (soft & solid) on at 100 yards, then a 2.5x8 sighted in with Speer 350 Mag Tips at 225 yards. About 250+ yards was all the farther I felt comfortable shooting with the Rigby. I imagine it could be shot farther with practice. It just wasn't something I wanted to put a lot of rounds through, however.

To Kev
Sometimes, I shoot a long range ( 360 yards), no problem with the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, I know exactly the ballistic of my cartridge. I use two scopes 1,25-4x24 Scmidt
& Bender and a swarovsky 2,5-10x42.
The .416 Rigby is a fantastic calibre, you have the accuracy, the stopping power, a moderate recoil, a great penetration in the animal. This is my 8 safaris in Africa and I'm enjoyed with the .416 Rigby,I never know some problems.
At soon.

Kev,
I don't reloaded the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, I use only
new cartridges from Federal company every times.

I have hunted everything with a 416 Remington...

My favorite bullets are the 400 gr. Nosler, 380 gr. Northfork and I like the 450 gr. Woodleighs very well...for solids I like the Northfork or GS Custom flat nose..

One of my very favorite bullets for everything is the Northfork cup point monolithic. I have shot Buffalo, Zebra, Impala, Hartebeeste, Wildebeest and warthog with it and it worked like a charm...I also used it in the 375 and in the 404 jefferys this year. If I am hunting where elephants, Lion, Buffalo, etc. are known to be around, that is the bullet that I will be using..

The 340 gr. Northfork is a heck of a Bison, Elk round I have been told, but have not used it... Bill Dowtin used the 240 gr. 338 Win. Northfork bullet and shot a Bison lengthwise and the bullet broke the heavy shoulder and came to rest in the hip perfectly expanded, that is some kind of penetration...he also broke both shoulders as I recall on a big bull elk with it.

On my last safari I took a 416 Rigby & a 450/400 Double
Rifle. I thought it was a marvelous caliber, good for
small antelope up to dangerous game. My longest shot was
under 200 yards & no problem. I shoot Federal Ammo with
400 grain Trophy Bonded bullets, they worked flawlessly
for me. Like the 375, 9.3 or 404, the 416 seems a great
all around cartridge.

I haven't had mine to Africa......yet. Mine is loaded with 400 grain Woodies, and I must say it does a great job on the ground hogs that were raiding my veggie garden this summer. All that was left of the critters was a hairy doughnut.

When I bought mine, I bought my hunting partner one too. You have to take care of a guy who hunts over 60 days a year and lets you know where the really good spots are. When I get to go to Africa I will borrow his back and have both a scoped and an iron sighted version. Of course he will probably screww the plan up by going too.
