.300 WSM Vs. 30-06 - to be used with 200 gr
      #22333 - 18/12/04 12:23 AM

Does the .300WSM have an advantage over 30-06 when it comes to "pushing" bullets 200-220 gr, and does it creat a bigger bang and recoil?
Is the .300WSM to hot for most safari conditions?
Thank you..

Robie J.

actually you will probably have better success with the 06. The short mag cases are just that - short - this is why they don't offer heavy bullets in them. the bullet will stick into the case so far to operate through the action that it will destroy the extra powder capacity the mag. offers. also remember that to get their velocity they operate at 65000 PSI, not 50000.

I personally would choose the 30-06 ,however you mention safari rifle so I would seriously look at a 338 win mag.
Reason:- you can load everything from 160--300gn projectiles.

As discussed on numerous other threads, ammo availability can be an issue when traveling on Safari. You should be able to pick up 30-06 ammo just about anywhere, many PH's & Safari companies have spare ammo around in the common calibers.
The 300 WSM is a fine cartridge but it's still hard to beat the 30-06 track record!

I think you will find the 50000 for the 30/06 is for CUP....copper units of pressure.

The 65000 PSI of the 300 WSM would convert to about 54000 CUP.

Of course for a reloader both the 30/06 and 300 WSM can and do operate at whatever pressure is determined by the reloader.

If ammo availability is an issue consider the 30-06 Ackley Improved. You get pretty well all the performance of a 300 Mag (and a significant improvement over the 06 with heavy bullets) and can use factory ammo with only a very small loss of velocity.

.30-06 is still the best. If you need more you need the .375 H&H!!!!!

If I wanted to shoot 200 gr. bullets in a 30 cal. then I would get a 300 Win mag, 300 Wby or my favorite, the 300 H&H and cook them out at near 3000 FPS...If you want a magnum, then shoot a magnum...NOTHING is gained from a short action...

If I shoot a 30-06 then I want a 180 gr. bullet at about 2700 FPS or a bit better...If I shoot a .308 (and I do) then I probably limit it to 165 gr. bullets.
