Part of the collection of "Buzz" Allen used in the shoe catalog. I believe he worked for them at the time. I visited his home in Cleveland and saw these rifles and many more. All in near new condition. Don't know what ever happened to him or his collection.

Did he sell guns and accessories as well? Certainly looks like it.
Very interesting catalogue. Thanks for posting.

A bunch of us used to have tables at the Ohio Gun Collectors shows in the 1970's. He had a lot of rifles for sale at that time. I don't remember him selling accessories. At his house he had shelf after shelf of accessories. Never saw so many in my life! All of his doubles were in excellent condition. The matched pair of doubles in the wood case still had the original oil cloth rappings on the tools! The .470 that was given to "deaf Spanks" was for sale a few years ago, didn't have the money then to buy it. Always wanted that rifle!

That's a great post. Thanks for sharing. We need more marketing of that type now.

That's what I thought when I saw the catalogue. I'm going to open a shoe shop, and all my guns, rifles, accessories become props for advertising and tax deductible ... a few photos taken in exotic hunting locations of shoes, and again, a tax deductible expense! (if only it was that easy. )

I knew Robert Allen when he worked at Johnston & Murphy in Nashville. He was an executive, but I never knew his job title. I remember most of the guns illustrated in the catalog. I have to say that his most impressive rifle was the Fraser 4 bore double. I believe it is the rifle illustrated in Richard Akehurst's Game Guns And Rifles, illustration no. 69. It weighed in at 22.5 lbs and was designed for spherical ball.
Its a little surprising that his John Dickson Round Action 4 bore single wasn't used. It is illustration no. 84 in Akehurst's book. Built in 1886, it was in Mint Condition. We fired it one day down at Owl Hollow Gun Club south of Franklin, TN. That was a memorable shooting experience.

Thanks for reminding me about Richard Akehurst's book, I had forgotten what beautiful rifles are there. A pity there are not large colour pics of them, that would really make it!!

Wow, that is really neat actually. I wish we had shoe/gun catalogs like that now. Also I wish Johnston and Murphy shoes were the quality they were back then, they are a shadow of their former selves....

As i recall, the 4-bore double was about 4" across at the breech, and weighed 23 lbs. It would be great for woodcock in the alders.
