I would say yes - kurz action and 8x51

Agree 100%

First, Kurz actions are all small ring (except one identified in Speed’s book)
Also, look at the thumb cut in the left wall, it is almost as long as the rest of the wall - about half the length of the left side of the action wall.
The floor plate release lever is more than half the length of the floor plate.
These things are the most obvious visual features that are easy to differentiate a Kurz from a standard length action.

Agreed.

But stock description is a bit off the mark...

Monte Carlo style stock

Not in line with my understanding of such a style!
Buttstock design appears to be standard Type B but the whole stock appears to be perhaps a tad shorter,
with horn (or ebony?) tip like a Type A, but with a mild schnabel reminiscent of Type B.
Interesting mix...

I like it!

Yes, and they describe it as a "custom" rifle which it really is not. An indication they don't really know what it is.

I still wonder about the 7.9KP caliber marking.

Agree the overall gun is nice looking!

Another Kurz coming up at auction:

https://www.proxibid.com/Guns-Military-A...422947#topoflot

SN 72737
"Gave as a Hunting Souvenir to a man from his friends. The small silver inlaid plaque reads in German Our Dear Friend Julius Kalle as a souvenir April 1 1921, then has the friends names. Serrated black composite butt plate. Checkered premium wood Monte Carlo style stock with Schnabel style front forend. Blued trigger guard, double set trigger, bolt receiver and barrel. Rear bolt safety switch. Rear left side of receiver bolt release. Rear notch and front fixed sight. Top of receiver has scope mounts. Comes with a unbranded leather shoulder sling. Serial number matching on the bolt, receiver and barrel. Side of barrel marked: 7,9 KP."

rifle probably what some call liberated

I quite like the styling of this rifle and stick.Very Germanic IMO. Would look very appropriate slung from ones should in a German forest dressed in loden.

It has qd claw scope mount bases as well, so very useful. Set trigger. Nice.

What a nice idea. Give a friend a rifle and put a plaque on it to commensurate the gift. Something we should do more of, today. I also like the idea of the small brass ecrusteon, or whatever they called, set into the bottom edge of buttstocks, many times including initials or a crest. Similar with the base of the pistol grip.

If it is a "8x51", what cartridge is that? Based on the .308 Winchester or what?

very funny, the 8x51 was probably designed before the designer of the 308 win were born.
its a shortened 8x57 for smaller game like roe deer to make the rifle smaller and lighter.
good thing today you can make brass very easy from 308 win.
you only resize the 308 brass and its ready.

barrel could be original, 300 Savage was a common caliber in the kurz mauser

please keep us updated on the progess when making a new kurz bolt

Yesterday Mark and I picked up the shortened bolt body from the welder. Now Mark will clean up the weld then back to the welder to get a new bolt handle attached that he has made which matches the original Oberndorf style. Then it's pretty much down hill from there. With the last question being what is the last step. I favor the action being sold to a custom rifle builder as it would make a truly nice piece. New barrel, nice piece of lumber, and so on... But it is Mark's and he will decide. I am just having fun being involved with my friend of more then 50 years.

Thanks.

No doubt with suitable projectiles it could take any European game.

The 8x51mm will have a much smaller shoulder than the .308. All of the. 307 family, the .243Win., 6mm Rem, 7/08Rem. .308Win. and .358 Win. have a .454" dia. shoulder, but also that 20 degree sloping shoulder. A .454" shoulder is the same diameter that P.O.Ackley chose for his "Improved" ctgs.

is that a military bolt? It doesn't look like the pear shaped commercial version in the photo.
