This recent Kurz with the missing bolt in 300 Savage was purchased by a friend of mine. This is his second Kurz rifle. 45 years ago he purchased his first when I got a lead on one at a gunshow and he bought it. Now 45 years later I pointed this one out and again he bought it. He will remanufacture a 98 bolt to work in the Kurz. He has the first rifle to use as a pattern. The buyer, Mark, was one of the known custom gun metalsmiths of the latter 20th century but dropped out of that work to purse other endeavors in 1990's so hasn't been active in guns for some time. He sees this as a retirement project. Mark is most capable and we live very close so I will be able to update you folks on the project if you like, as it goes along. I am currently working on a 1918 Oberndorf Mauser action that Mark had for 30 years and never worked so I decided to see what I can do with it.

making a kurz bolt from a standard mauser bolt is most interesting!

I can only assume that he cuts the bolt in 2 parts and tig welding them together for the kurz length what does not affect the bolt head and its strength.

Lancaster, Well we have been discussing before the actual sale and of course since Saturday. Of the work that must be done the bolt itself while shortening is not easy and you are basically correct in your thoughts on how to do the work, probably more complicated we feel will be shortening the extractor. Mark has a plan although I haven't discussed the details with him as of yet. Then of course there is also firing pin and spring length issues.

I love the handwritten cleaning instructions. Very neat kit.

Lancaster,

Nice post. Would-be a fun rifle.

The take down instructions are a lot more complicated than what I'd normally expect.

This rifle is nearly identical to a rifle that was shown here back in 2015 and can be see at this link
Similar rifle link

One other thing about the auction sight that is carrying this fine rifle. You can page up and down and there are a few other quite interesting rifles in this auction. Fun to look. Thanks Lancaster for adding this Fraser to the postings.

So if this beauty is an actual Daniel Fraser Velox 303, would you simply take the rim of a .303 British & cut an extractor groove?
Perhaps neck Up & then resize back down to get the correct headspace as well with a proper set of dies, the old 303 British is a lot narrower at the shoulder?
Maybe Bruce Bertram could be a source of brass?

it could be - 303 Brit and 303 Velox

I would use 8x57 Mauser
late turne the base to from 11,90mm to 11,60 mm, resize and shorten to 56 mm length

I was talking to bouldersmith about this rifle the other day.
He thinks it is merely a 7.65 Argentine with Fraser's special bullet. I haven't looked into that as of yet.
Would make it very easy to feed if that's the case.

Here's one that got away...

Hammered for $500 and not a bad example of a TypeB!
I should have been paying closer attention rather than just putting it on my watchlist.
