When would you cross bolt a big bore?

Is it worth doing for a .300 medium bore ina timber stock? What about a .458 BRNO? If not, when do you need to put another recoil lug or a cross bolt or 2 in?

HDU

From a personal opinion from owning a number of big bores 375 and up
and based on my stock makers thoughts,

300 Win Mag etc etc 1 Cross Bolt
338 etc at least 1 cross bolt
375 and up 2 cross bolts, ESPECIALLY 458 and above.

It also depends on how good the stock job / bedding is.

A badly inletted stock will crack within 5 - 10 shots.

Adding another cross bolt is a lot less expensive than replacing a stock
if it breaks. I have seen people try to save money by skimping on these
things and it ends up costing them twice as much.

Hope this helps

HDU,
For your 458 Brno, you would be far better off putting time into correctly bedding the two original recoil lugs than fitting a crossbolt.
Also you need to create some clearance behind the rear tang.
If crossbolts are not fitted and bedded correctly, they do little toward preventing cracking/splitting the stock.

I much prefer "hidden" crossbolting on big bolt guns.

Thank you very much.

Any hints on which action screws should be tightened up in which order? How tight should they be?

Thanks agains...

I see no reason to cross bolt any caliber less than the 416 Remington, but you could cross bolt a 375 if you wish...

A good glass bedding job will do a better job than cross bolts in any caliber, but I still use them with a 416 up...Definately glass and cross bolt and use two recoil lugs on any gun larger than 458 Win...

My 9.3x62 and my 338 Win have not been glassed or cross bolted and I have been shooting them for many years, but they are custom rifles with proper bedding in good dry cured Turkish Walnut...

Good wood can make all the difference in the world..

The comments about glass bedding are so true.....However the appearance of good cross bolts that are milled in(as opposed to merely drilled) is "cool" and I install them on all my guns with bores 338 cal and bigger.

Are they needed?.....probably not.....but they sure don't hurt either.

I had don allen build be a matched pair of dakota's a bit ago & he recommended cross bolting anything 375 and larger. I'll bow to his opinion

If a stock splits at 5 shots take demand that the manufacturer replace it.
