I like your idea of a seven pound .405, you don't have to load it way up for the animals you are talking about using it on. I would have voted for the 45-70 but since that one was ruled out right off the bat, I've voted for the next best all around caliber, the .405 Winchester. I use 300 grain bullets in mine at around 2050 FPS. It holds up it's energy better than the 45-70 300 grain bullet and I think it shoots a little flatter. A seven pound .405 with 24 inch barrels makes a great woods rifle, and it kills with decisive power. That's what I want in an all around smaller bore gun. Bob

What about 8x57jrs? It would do all you want in terms of performance, it has medium pressure, etc.

The sticky wicket is the availability of factory ammo in your area.

8x57 or any Euro cartridge except 9.3
would IMHO be a big no no in the US.

Folks ,

I have had the opportunity to hunt white tail deer with the 6.5 x 53R with the 160 grain bullet and have had excellent one shot harvests . The long for caliber bullet has remarkable penetration with it's cross sectional density . But if one is going after hog or even the Texas exotics , I agree with the 405 for the Taylor Knock Out power . Those animals are tough and will absorb quite a bit of kinetic energy . The 405 within your pressure constraints will be close to 3500 foot pounds if you go 45,000 to 48,000 . Add your Barnes 300 grain TSX and it should work well to 120 - 130 yards on the hog or heavy exotic . Jim

The .405 is more a medium weight double. I speak from experience when I say the .35 WCF is outstanding as a light double. The only exception would be the great .303 British or 30-40 Krag IMHO.

A 150gr. bonded bullet was used this year on moose, elk, black bear, whitetail and mule deer by a friend of mine of 34 years - with EXCEPTIONAL results on all species. The muzzle velocity was approximately 2,760fps - or what could be managed by a maximum load from most .303's with a good bullet.
The maximum range fired at, was just over 400yards, and just happened to be the elk. He was shot through the spine as my friend held a bit high. The result, of course, was that the elk dropped in his tracks. No animal walked more than a few steps. To make a .30 or .303 calibre bullet sufficient in NA for literally all game, merely takes good shooting & a decent bullet.

Good shooting.

That is the key.

The problem comes when people miss the vitals.
