New Zealand Hunting

New Zealand hunting goes a bit quiet about now.
Most of the game animals are dropping their young.
Stags have mostly dropped their antlers and tahr and chamois skins are not so good as trophies.
It's time to week the garden...? Maybe not.

Yes. Nice conditioned animal although they look a bit scrappy in the moult at this time of year.

I'd say it would be around 9-9.5 inches.

You judge by the height of the horns above the ears and the amount of curvature.

Chamois at timberline like this doe, are probably about to drop their kids.

I took all day to get this close.

Nice pictures. A chamois is quite high on my hit list, and a trip to New Zealand are very tempting. Which time of year would you guys recommend for a trip to New Zealand? It`s a really long flight, so the more I can hunt at this time, the better.

Good Question.

There are quite a few "depends on"

Depends on whether you want a chamois in summer or winter coat (see pic below)

and whether you want to hunt other species such as Red Stag with branches on top.

or if you want a go at Tahr in winter coat.

Depends on whether you're any good at winter hunting etc

Winter hunting - what temperatures. I'm getting too old for hunting at -40, any more.

A stag would be on the list to, I thought that was mandatory when visiting New Zealand?

It depends on what you mean by winter hunting -10 to -15 Celsius is not a problem, but more than that I prefer to keep the fire going.

Yea. We don't have it cold down here like you guys...it goes a few degrees below zero but we don't usually get those really cold temperatures.
Our temperatures are good for hunting without having to wear the heavy duty gears.

And you're right that the Red Stag is on most hunters list when they come to New Zealand.

But these fellows are not so popular with overseas visitors.

Ok, now I`m getting curious, how many huntable species do you guys have? I knew of the Chamois, Red stags, Sika stags and Tahr. I would not mind hunting those in the last picture!

There are more species to hunt here than you can poke a stick at....what about these wild rams?

We have about eight small flocks of wild rams but the trophies are becoming quite uncommon.

This photo was taken only a few weeks ago on a day trip from Christchurch. They are Woodstock Rams.

The common ram on Hunting Estates is the Arapawa Ram.

Cool! the ram on the left has the width, while the one on the right facing the camera has good weight with broomed tips - looks to me.

These are not farm stock unless you mean they originated from farm stock over 100 years ago.

There were not sheep in New Zealand when the colonists arrived.

They are free range Woodstock Wild sheep flock photographed up the Waimakariri Gorge.

It is the best photo I have got in years.

You are quite right.

Those three deer are imported elk photographed in a safari park.
You can tell by the short grass in the background.

We have wild elk in New Zealand in Fiordland but they have hybridised with red deer.

Any pictures of wild elk in New Zealand have to be from Fiordland.

This sort of hunting has also become very popular.

Our population of only 4 million people supports three pig hunting magazines.

A heap of books written about it too.

Stags is velvet.

I stumbled across these two fellas on public land a couple of weeks ago.

I had to sit motionless for about 30 minutes before they were totally relaxed.

I'm not sure why they didn't bolt straight away which is what wild stags on public land would
normally do at a distance of 100 meters.
