Reloading the 410 with solids ???
      #22081 - 11/12/04 12:30 AM

Has anybody had any experience reloading 410 with solids and are projectiles or molds available for them..

45 years ago as I recall we used to shoot 44-40 rounds through an old SMLE 410 .
Worked fine at 25 yards !

You could try cutting the front section (radially)of a shotshell, leaving small areas uncut so that it holds together until fired. The the whole shotcharge goes downrange as a solid encased in the front half of the case!

As a lad (won't say how long ago) before we were allowed centefires, this was very good roo/pig/goat medicine!

BTW - No, not Portarlington - Some chaps were known to have resorted to the 44/40 trick for Sunday Island/Hog Deer.

Alan,
A common lurk here is to load a .38 cal hollow base wadcutter in a standard plastic .410 wad. The hollow base gives the same weight-forward stabilisation as the Foster-type slug. Powder charge as for 3/8 oz shot load.

Lyman apparently once made a .372" 138 gr .410 slug mould, but it's long discontinued.

Cheers,
Doug
