Cast bullet loads for 500 Jeffery

Hi,

Does anyone have any load data for cast bullets in the 500 Jeffery using Accurate 5744 powder for light loads to get more more trigger time without being knocked into week.

I would e-mail the powder company. They will give you information that is spot on and won't make a mess of things.

Tried it twice now, because I am in Europe they will not help me, see the warning on the Accurate web site about Europe. They just copy and paste the warnings off the web site to me.

Perhaps if someone in the US or Canada asked the question they might get a better response.

My memory is not 100% on how this stuff works, but there is a calculation based on case capacity that will lead you to how much 5744 you can use in a case. The Accurate website used to have it, in very general terms. A quick Google search should give you the approximate case capacity of your specific case and the amount of XMP 5744 you can use.

Hi,

Most probably in the short term I will be using bullets cast with one of the NEI moulds which a local guy has that, casts for a living.

His mould is the NEI .510-430 grn GC so I will be using those until I can get a heavier bullet mould like the .510-550 grn GC from NEI later on.

The formula for XMP-5744 for either a reduced load or a starting load for cast bullets is as follows:

Seat a bullet in the case you will be using. To the depth you will be using.

Mark where the base of the bullet is in the case.

Fill to this mark with XMP-5744.

Weigh the total amount of powder in grains.

Multiply this number by .4.

For example: if you have 100 grains of 5744 fill the case to 100%. 40 grains of 5744 will be your start load for a cast bullet or a reduced load for a jacketed bullet. Work carefully from here.

This is what Accurate Arms used to use as a rule of thumb. They don't offer this any more since being bought out 6-7 ago.

Many thanks albertan, That's nice and easy to do and work out.

Is there a rough guide / % that gives a maximum load but I take your point start from the 40% suggested point and work up slowly.

You referenced jackets bullets, I didn't think you could shoot should that low velocity loads with jacketed bullets. Interesting I will try and get a copy of the original wording from Accurate manual.

Pretty sure the jacketed would also be over 1,000fps, about the lower limit for a jacketed bullet. I expect it would work, but - I'd certainly try the cast first - then subtract about 60 to 100fps for the same load with a jacketed bullet of exactly the same weight. In my .458's the jacketed usually gave 100fps lower speeds than like-weight cast, with identical loads - but that was with loads up around max.

Hi AkMike,

Sorry been a bit busy and didn't know what cast bullet I would be starting with then.

Found out there's a local caster that has a NEI 430 grn GC mould or thats what they cast out as, so it looks like I will start with that bullet.

Need 450Ackley to come back, he shoots lots of cast in his .500 Jeffery with very good accuracy.

Finally found my reply from Accurate Arms Powder, here is the load data they sent for my 500 Jeffery shooting 525 grain Cast Performance Bullets with AA 5744. I'm buying myself a reloading notebook for Christmas lol ...

We suggest the following.
Caliber: .500 Jeffery - Rimless.
Barrel length: 24”
Primers: We recommend using only Winchester Magnum WLRM or Federal 215 magnum primers.
Reduced loads:
Powder: Accurate – 5744.
Bullet weight: 525 grains.
Low load: 55.0 grains (1600 - 1700 ft/p/sec)
Mid range Load: 65.0 grains (1825 – 1925 Ft/p/sec).
NOTES:
It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.
1. TO ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD.
2. If at all possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

I use BlueDot pistol powder with my cast bullets and a std. large rifle primer.
