Choice of optics for a kipplauf?
      #220048 - 23/11/12 09:53 AM

I just bought a Brno kipplauf in 5,6*50r, a cheap way to test if I like this kind of weapon as much as I think I will. But then the question of optics comes along. What should I choose for this rifle? I was thinking of a Zeiss diatal 6*42 for general stalking purposes and a diatal 8*56 for really low light conditions and fox shooting. But a Swarovski 2,2-9*42 should not be to bad either, or maybe a 3-9*36 Swarovski, but a 42mm would be better for evening hunts. What do you guys think?

Pictures of the rifle will come as soon as it arrives.

The Zeiss Diatal 6x42 would serve perfectly well for 90% of what you want to do, and for the other 10% just get a bit closer. And they are nice and light. Not sure the 8x56 has much over the 6x42, but if you are mostly shooting roe/ foxes at longer range then perhaps this might be an option. But the 42 allow lower mounting, and even more so with the 3-9x36.

I have a 6x42 diatal and it is excellent in low light. I can shoot well beyond being able to see the quarry with the naked eye.

Big question is do you want to use it close range driven type shooting and for this do you want to use a scope as opposed to open sights. If yes then a 1.5-6x42 might be perfect. Or a1-4x20 and an 8x56 might be the way to go. Given your calibre not really a question though.

bakposten, just keep in mind when selecting a scope: A slim, light Kipplaufbüchse looks rather unhappy when hung under a big "modern" scope with 30mm tube diameter and an objective over 40mm!

Thanks for the input guys.

I pretty much scrapped the idea of the 8*56, I had to mount a 3-12*56 Meopta Meostar on it tonight so that I can shoot it tomorrow. The only mounts available today was of course 30mm, but at least I can test how the weapon performs and produce some empty brass. And I can`t agree more that it looks ridiculous. I`m leaning more and more against the 6*42 diatal, since it has the 1" tube. For driven type shooting I will take another gun with me, so that`s not a problem.

I have a 4*34 Pecar scope lying around, but I think 4 magnification is a bit on the small side when it comes to roe deer and foxes. And the next step seems to be the 6*42. The only other in between I can think about is the 10*36 zeiss, but 10 times is a bit too much as an all round magnification, in my mind. American optics is not an option. So to get a scope with less than a 40mm objective seems to be difficult. But I will keep checking egun for possible matches for my new rifle.

Keep your eyes open for a Zeiss 3-9x 36 - compact and very bright optics. Don't make them now but Swarovski still do.

I will, found a couple on egun now. I had never seen that configuration before, unless on a Zeiss jena scope. The 3-9*36 zeiss looks like a good candidate.
