Help! Cast in DR regulation
      #219759 - 18/11/12 01:15 AM

I have a Simson double in 405 Win, which does very well with Jacketed bullets. Would like to shoot cast due to price, etc. I have some nice 265 gr. Keith style, which will go just as fast as the jacketed without leading, However at 50 they are 2' apart! I have to DROP the velocity to get them to start to come together, and by the time I get close to regulation, the cases won't seal, and velocity is unusable. I'm kinda confused! Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks, Doug

Doug,
If it were my rifle and I wanted to use that specific bullet, I would try different powder. I'd start with Trail Boss and work my way to the slower powders. If that didn't work then I'd try a heavier bullet. In my 45/70 double, changing powder makes a big difference in where the loads print, even with loads producing the same velocity.

Yeah, I've tried several powders, fro the standard cast bullet to h4895, but all print apart! Maybe the weight is the issue after all. I feel like the "stay time" in the bore is much less than jacketed, and this may be the trouble. Really confused about having to reduce velocity to bring together however!

What was your regulating load? Folks have reported very good success with the 75% rule.

Start with your regulating load and use the same powder charge but drop the bullet to 75% i.e. if regulated with 60 gr. of RL-15 and 400 gr. bullet use 60 gr. of RL-15 and a 300 gr. bullet.

You can also use the same bullet weight but reduce the powder charge down to 75% so in the case above it would be a400 gr. bullet with 45 gr. of RL-15.

For some folks the 75% rule has been spot on and for some it has required a little bit of fine tuning.

Doug:
Bullet weight and diameter will certainly effect regulation. I would find a mold that is the same weight as your jacketed bullet and .001-.002 larger than groove dia. Plus the ogive/nose shape should be similar. i.e. if it regulates with a round nose, it probably will not with a spitzer.

Have you tried 5744 powder?

If you decide to go with a mold I highly recommend Tom at accuratemolds.com.

If it's not shown he'll build it and he's very fast compared to others.

Trail Boss, or are you looking for 'some' power too?
