Finally Got My Double!!
      #219521 - 13/11/12 03:18 AM

Been casually looking for one. I have too many other gun interests and a limited income to pay $10K+ for a double so this was a really good deal for me. Found a nice Cogswell & Harrison in 375 NE 2 1/2-inch caliber. Cogswell doesn't appear to have the best rep here being a "cheap" rifle, but this one is tight as a drum, well cared for and beautiful to me. I really like that it is fairly plain with some light engraving on the receiver. Looks like it was made to hunt with and not a safe queen. The buttstock was replaced sometime in the past but it's a nice piece of wood and fits the receiver and butt-plate nicely.

Was purchased by a British officer in 1907 and taken to India - his name is engraved on the butt-plate. The seller had done quite a bit of research and this officer had quite a life. I've also done some research - was wounded in the Boer War and also participated in WWI in Europe. Retired a major sometime after the war. Last thing I found was that he and his wife went to Jamaica in 1938 - he was 62. He died in 1946 at the age of 70. Still working on his post WWI activities so I have no idea how the rifle ended up in the US.

I like this caliber because I have a BSA bolt action in the same. Shot the double yesterday and it was a blast (pun intended) with Westley Richards bought ammo. Going to have to reload the caliber if I'm going to shoot this thing alot. I'd like to hunt with it someday.

Thanks for looking.

Fantastic! Wish I could find one in my neck of the woods. What sort of groups were you getting?

Very classy looking rifle and a great caliber for North American game. I need to double check, but I think you can form brass from .405 Winchester cases.

That's a very handsome looking working rifle in a very useful caliber - nothing wrong with a Coggie. It should give you good service if you feed it right.

I think Graf's has Hornady .405 brass for $50 per 50. I'll use them in my own .375. The extra $4 per case for other brands is not worth it to me just to have the headstamp right. Especially when I intend to shoot the heck out of it.

Thanks to all who replied! Because of the relatively low price I'm not as apprehensive about shooting it and potentially damaging something as expensive as a car. Groups were about 8-inches at 100 yards but low. Not sure if this was because of my lack of experience with doubles, using express sights, or the ammo, or all three or none of the above? Again, I need to reload and I guess 405 Winchester can be made into 375 2 1/2 - I've got the shooting British double rifles book packed in a box around here somewhere. I'm sure that will start me in the right direction.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Cogswell & Harrison! Also a very useable calibre - try varying the weight and velocity of your ammo.

Great rifle there, really neat caliber too.
I've been shooting a Lee-Speed in .375 lately with the Woodleigh bullets and formed 444 marlin brass.
Let us know how you do with the 405 brass if you go that route.

cheers

Thanks to all who replied. I never thought I'd be able to own a double rifle due to the expense and my other addictions. This is a dream come true.

Also thanks for the kind words in support of C&H - I've never thought of them as a "lesser" gunmaker. My brother in law has a matching pair of shotguns from them that are as beautiful as you will find.

Also, its good to see some other .375 NE flanged 2 1/2" shooters out there. What is the shorthand to describe this cartridge anyway? 375 flanged? 375 2 1/2? There seems to be a 375 flanged magnum and, of course, 375 H&H so just 375 might be confusing?

Is there a website or book wherein the making of 375 flanged from 405 Winchester is described?

Best,

John

The very first double rifle I ever bought, back in the early 1960s, was a Cogswell & Harrison .375 2.5", same type as you have there, and it also was the one and only double rifle that I ever sold too (actually, made a part payment trade with it, on a Westley Richards that I still have). That original double, for me, came with a ton of Norma .303 brass, that was longer than for .303, so was used to form .375 2.5" brass (I still have and use that brass). Most recently, I noticed, surprisingly, at least four of these same type C & H doubles, in same .375 caliber, for sale on market, so about a month ago, I bought one, my second C&H that is identical to yours too. Additionally, I have three other British double rifles in this same caliber, one a hammer gun that is regulated for 300 grain bullets, while all others I presently have, including C&H, are regulated for 270 grain bullet, thus I am sure that yours is also regulated for 270 grain bullets (velocity is around 2000 fps, while pressure with this cartridge is quite low). I have handloaded this cartridge for years, and shot many deer with it.
By the way, why form your own brass, when good .375 2.5" is readily available in U.S.A. today? Best powder for this cartridge is IMR 4895. This was first .375 developed by British, called .375, 2.5 inch, followed up years later with the .375 mag., flanged and belted versions, for double rifles and for bolt rifles.

I got my Horneber brass... eventually.

I would be interested in the conversion of 405 brass provided it doesn't involve a lathe... amazingly we don't all have them knocking around.

Thanks again to all who replied? Great info about the caliber and maker! Can't wait to shoot the rifle again to figure out how accurate it really is.

the 375 flanged is a good round that have killed anythink in africa up to elephant in the old times( not that I recommand it for dangerous game, only for leopard). iirc the cartridge was a Holland&Holland development to get the biggest round into a 303 Brit sized double rifle frame. unfortunately today there is no question that the 9,3x74R is the best medium size double rifle cartridge and that is the end for every other round from the 9x57R Mauser upwards. nonetheless the 375 flanged is a good round for anything on feet in north america. I have it in a Wilkinson Mannlicher and the rifle was coming with brass made of Bertram 405 Win.
think the best basic brass today in quality and prize is the hornady 405
