300 Rook double
      #219191 - 07/11/12 04:34 AM

years ago i was in the cabelas in Budah TX and the had a 300 Rook double rifle by one of the big name english makers but i can't remeber which one. Has anyone on here ever seen one or have one? It was in perfect condition. If anyone has pictures of a rifle like this any pictures on here would be great to see

Most, if not all, the British makers made double rifles in rook calibers. At a Montana gun show, I saw one such example, not in very good condition, but by Holland and Holland. You will find a few pictures of other examples, in past issues of Double Gun Journal. I have a few rook rifles, but none are doubles.

They are there but very few and far between, In have not handled one but have seen several pics

VERY desirable especially by the top makers, I certainly would snap one up if one turned up here in the UK

Most rook rifles, especially the sidelever ones were made in the Birmingham gun trade and just stamped with the name of the top maker, Purdey, Holland & Holland as well as most of the other names did likewise

There was no need for a double when rook shooting, but as doublerifljack says, if you wanted one, the top makers would make you one.
An Alexander Henry (or other) hammer double rook rifle, nicely in proportion would certainly whet the appetite!!

There was a nice Greener .300 Rook in the Holt's auction several months ago, if I recall correctly.

Went for big bucks!

Two of my friends here have H&H .300/ 295 doubles. When they were new they retailed for 30 guineas or more, whilst the best H&H single was only 12 guineas. This is why they are rare! But they shoot beautifully and balance very well. Bore size is usually quite tight, i.e. about 0.293".

Any possibility if pictures? I am sure they would be most appreciated!

They are both hammerless sidelocks, and both shoot particularly well. I have a 'replica', builton a Midland Gun Company .410 hammer double from the 1920s and now in .32-20, which is also a joy to shoot.

These sound svelte, and lovely, like the little .22 Hornet double made by Bailey Bradshaw ...

On that note a small/mini calibre Henry was much more likey to be made in house than the usual Belgian buy-ins for the English trade.

I have a W W Greener in 310 Greener. It's a little boxlock, makers case and extras. Bores as new, shoots 2" groups with 10 rd at 50. I can email pics if someone wants to post them, haven't had any luck myself! Built 1910, in a batch of handmade custom guns.

.310 Cadet / Greener is an accurate calibre if you can cast the heel base bullets.

Can't wait to see the photos put up on this thread.
