Elk Hunt..

Long time friend got an incredible bull--shooting his 270 ...we noticed him feeding on a hillside after about a 4-6" snow fall ..he was feeding in the open...we made the sneak on him and after about an hour --got in on him close enough to get a shot..

My good friend turns 78 this week...awesome

Very nice elk and it's always a bonus when you can drive to it.
Bob, good luck with the wolf, shoot two while you're there.

Private land..so yes..it is nice when you can drive to it..we hiked and hunted on foot..after the kill. I hiked back to get a 4 wheeler for 1. my friend to get to the kill easier and 2. pull it back down the mountain...

Agree on the wolves..plan to go out myself later this year...

Southwestern Montana is beginning to really suck for hunting! I covered 30+ miles and made 8 or 9 stands. I cut one black bear track (two to three days old), in what was at one time prime big game country. I was using a Fox-pro eletronic call and tried several of the different calls. wounded fawn, coyote, etc. I don't have a wolf howling call, think I might get one. We have had recient rains so the ground is soft and fresh tracks should be easily found, none were seen. On the way home I saw one mule deer doe and a group of 6-8 cows and calves on private property along a well used paved road, but I did get into the woods and enjoyed that, it seems the older I get the less I tend to get out. My hunting partner of 50+ years lives over in the beaverhead and we can't always get together as much as we would like. I have access to some private property in the Big Hole that I might try on tomorrow, if I get my honeydo's completed today.

Yes--depending on where you are--things are changing..however over here if you go north..where the wolves aren't yet..things are still pretty good...

Lots of elk this year everywhere..but think unless you have access to private land its tough
heard on the local news this morning the harvest success rates are down 22%...

If you dont mind really curious how you do on the wolf hunt..as I stated I plan to go out later this fall for one as well..

I'm an amateur at this calling business, but I've gone about it the sameway I would call coyote's. I think the next trip for wolves I'm going to contact the biologist first and see if he can direct me into where a pack has been spotted within the last day or two. Its certainly going to be a learn as I go proposition. Good luck to you hope you are successful.

Not sure if it was just luck or whatever..but my first trip to Alaska I brought along a rabbit mouth call..Heard one howling one morning as I was waking up..headed his way while it was just getting light..found him sitting on a hillside..broke out the call and let go for about 30 seconds..he got up, stretched out and starting trotting my way..hammered him with a 7-300 Weatherby wildcat at around 265 yards or so...

think that might be part of the success route..find them first as you suggested..then turn on the call...

I do hunt coyotes quite a bit in the winter..that seems to wrk really well on them..

Just a suggestion, but you really need to check the regs on the wolf calling equipment, especially before you talk to the biologist (or any other FWP personnel) about what you're using.

We're allowed to use the electronic calls here for wolves and coyotes now and guys say they are working well on both.
I've been told a fawn in distress works and that the wolves really don't like a coyote in their 'area'. Usually here, the coyotes move out when the wolves arrive.

We can use electronics in Montana for coyotes and other critters classed as predator (coyote, badger etc) or non-game (fox, coon etc) but big-game (bear, deer etc) or furbearers (bobcat, wolverine) no electriconically recorded or amplified calls allowed.

You can see what happens when you assume! When FWP was discussing the trapping issue they also were talking about allowing eletronic's, I just assumed eletronics were approved also.

I'm thinking they may change this in the future and allow them for wolves. It's probably a legislative thing as well as a FWP decision though. That's how it is with the limit, only 1 hunting but we can kill a total of 3 with trapping included, according to the warden at trapping certification class we had to take.

Forgot to add that to change the limit to three by just hunting would have to be a legislatine thing.
