Alex Henry .360 2 1/4" BPE double rifle
      #218965 - 03/11/12 11:32 PM

Cased Alex Henry .360 underlever hammer double rifle. 90% original case colors and 95% brown and finish. Only English double rifle I have ever seen that has set triggers. Also has two original bullet molds, one for conical and one for round ball. there is a powder measure for each mold.

This is why I've always been drawn to Scottish rifles. Everything has a place. The tools aren't simply thrown in the case - it's organized beauty! I'd love a better photo of the stab crimper, cylindrical die, and bullet seater. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks, guys. I have not shot this rifle and might not. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be. My first double rifle in 1971 was a W W Greener 8 Bore top lever double rifle. Would love to have an 8 Bore back again, but out of my price range now!

That's a great rifle! I have an Alex. Henry single in the same calibre. Why not try the "Rook" loading with the round ball? Very friendly to shoot, with no risk of damage. Normal .375" round balls for a muzzle-loading revolver work fine.

Let us know.

And the Dougall not far behind it.

What beautiful sets of rifles and tools! Alexander Henry's work is in a class of it's own.

Can't wait to see more pictures.

How do you load the Rook load you were referring to? Do you seat the ball on a wad deep in the case on the black powder load? Thanks for your help. What type of single shot Henry do you have? Is it a falling block?

Thank you for posting the new pictures.

As usual, whenever I see a new collection of accessories, it appears to me that no two of the same tools are ever exactly the same. The combination of materials varies quite a bit.

The engraving on the .500 die is a very nice nice touch.

I am curious as to the purpose of the depression at the end of the .360 crimper - it looks to have been put there for a reason. I wonder if it has something to do with the ball load?

I am making some of those double threaded capper/decappers right now, in fact I finished the three start threads today.

To make the round ball reload I use a .44 Special final die but fitted with a .38 top punch to push the round ball deep inside the case down onto the powder. I did not use a wad with smokeless powder but would do for a Black Powder load, probably with a tiny smear of lubricant on top of the ball.

After firing the cases do not need to be resized, although chambers do vary - I have three different chambers in my two rifles! My Alex. Hanry is a simple break barrel Jones underlever style, fitted with a new barrel on 1882. The dealer did not recognise the name or address on the barrel ....

Thanks HistoricBore, I might give that a try. I don't believe Alex Henry made too many Jones underlever single shot rifles. I owned a falling block .360 Henry many years ago. I have some copies of pages from the Alex Henry records and only show one underlever single shot rifle.

What a truly magnificent little rifle, complete with its vast array of accoutrements. Do you know how it shoots?

Thank you for posting.

Thanks for your comment, Buchseman. I don't know how it shoots. The bores are excellent and the rifle does not appear to have been used much. Like I said, it does have set triggers, so I expect it would be easy to shoot a good group, but probably not with my eyes. It has a conical and also a round ball mold and seperate powder measures for each. I didn't include a picture of the round ball mold. It is contained beneath the two powder measures. This rifle was one of 3 made for William Oliver, a very wealty landowner in Australia, if I remember right. I'll need to look at the factory records again. Would be interesting to see if both the loadings, round ball and conical, will regulate in the double rifle.

I note that one of the Dougall tools is stamped Holland and Holland.

I put in a few tools from the Alex Henry, the .500 Dougall and also from a .450 3 1/4" BPE. Royal Hammerless Holland and Holland double rifle made for the Nizam of Hyderabad that I own. The 12 Bore capper/decapper is also from my collection. All of the tools in the Alex Henry case and Dougall case are original to the cased sets. The Henry is a .360 and the Dougall a .500 3". I put other examples of accessories in to show what is out there.

That gun is simply magnificent. I'm not sure which is cooler, the gun or the loading tools. The fact that they're so perfectly cased together puts the cool factor off the chart. If only makers put that much consideration into a gun today.

Thanks for your comments. It took me many years to be able to afford a rifle like this and also many years to find one.
