Chronic Wasting Disease reminder, Deer & Elk hunting
      #218842 - 02/11/12 05:33 AM

Read this elsewhere, seemed like a good thing to pass along -

As a reminder to all of us, do not shoot an elk or deer in the head or spinal column. It blows prions, if so infected, all over the place. While they might be killed by digestive juices or cooking, it's just not worth the risk. The infection can be present long before it is obvious.

It's hard not to do, when trying to finish an animal off. We need to retrain ourselves. Don't try to do it with a knife, either. A tension pneumothorax from a goring makes for a great war story, but you might not be the one telling it.

Following the same thought, my good friend and primary care physician, a DVM, strongly urges against any insult to the spinal column...such as cutting a head off before quartering/boning or butchering with bone.
