A heck of a buy
      #218627 - 30/10/12 04:48 AM

While sitting in my pop-up blind for two weeks, waiting for a non-existant moose to appear, I convinced myself that I need to build another double rifle when I finish my 9.3x74R. What I decided on was a 6.5x57R to fill the gap between my .22 Hornet and my .303 British. When I started searching the net for barrels, I discovered that Tony at Tradex in Montreal has a case of M38 Swedish Mauser barrels, arsenal-new, still in the grease, turned and short-chambered. for $100 each. My two arrived today and they are outstanding. Once I had scrubbed all of the grease off the exterior and the bores, they are in NEW condition. The Swede has always been renowned for its accuracy and when I look at these bores it's obvious why. If you're looking to build a double for light big game and large varmints, these may be of interest to you. For Canadians, with no import worries, it's a no-brainer.

PS:The 6.5x55 is slightly larger at the base than the 6.5x57R so if the reamer does not clean up the short chambers, it might be necessary to trim about .025" off the chamber end of the barrels. Also, these are military, 3-step barrels so you must turn them to your desired final contour.

The Swede is a wonderfully crafted rifle and as a machinist, i appreciate the quality. So much so, that one year (10 years ago) I sold 201 of these rifles during our winter gun show season. (3 shows)
At that time I bought them 50 at a time and the delivered price was $55 each!!! Delivered !!!

Those were the days.

The (Swedish?) gentleman who held the record for "oldest gold medalist in the Olympics" shot a Sauer double in 6.5 for the running boar competition. He said it made it MUCH easier to get on the second shot, as opposed to heavier calibers, because of decreased muzzle rise. That might be a great reason to make a smaller caliber double, no? Steve

its possible to made 6,5x57R barrels out of this 6,5x55 swedish. have a Vergueiro sporter in the make in 6,5x57.
the barrel was a 6,5x55 before but you have to cut 20-30mm from the chamber end.

lancaster,
That is exactly correct, because the base diameter of the 6.5x55 is larger than that of the 6.5x57R and the chambering reamer will not clean up the existing short chamber. I have already turned these barrels to a super-lightweight profile and also faced 1/2" off the breech end. I will have loadimg dies and a finishing reamer in my hands on Thursday afternoon. Brass is impossible to find right now but I have about 50 once-fired 8x57JR brass from my Cape gun which I intend to neck down to form into 6.5x57 brass.

You're thinking about Oscar Swahn who won a silver medal in 1920s Olympics at age 72 right?

Looks like has a bolt - action on the pictures I find so far.
Do you have any links? Would be cool to see that sauer, and a well built double should fit the bill.

The one with the double rifle in 6,5*55 was actually a Norwegian, Harald Natvig. It was an article about that rifle in one of the Swedish hunting magazines a little while back, but I can`t find it.

Ron,
Do you know how to get a couple of these barrels into the States? Tradex does not ship internationally. I think you have a great idea and I would like to try making a set. Thank you.--Bill
