Coburg Banteng Trip

Hi everyone,

Just home last night from an awesome trip to the Coburg Peninsular chasing banteng. Not many pics yet and it will be a brief report as I intend on penciling a magazine article.

Conditions were bloody hot and bloody humid and the first full day of hunting we walked around 20km's for the day including during the middle of the day when the banteng were resting up in the shade, mostly around swamps and also in the coastal country where there was a soothing breeze.

Plenty of bulls seen and we also saw bigger bulls than the really old gnarly one I took. The 416 was plenty of gun really as my bull was sooooo old I could've knocked him over with a feather.

The 9.3 was blooded on some really big old boars and was effective on these sleeping brutes from close range.

A great highlight was seeing 2, yes 2, sambar stags. One with antlers about 27" long and a second stag with antlers probably in the 20-21" range. Had quick departing shots at both but no cigars.

Anyway, I'll try and add a few pics and a bit more info as I go.

Nice horn shape. What's the story on the bull's colour? Are there many bulls that are tan? I remember seeing some when hunting there, different shades of colour.

Amazing to see a couple of sambar. I would love to know where you saw them. Just out of interest. I hoped out of proportion to reality to seeing one there, but never did.

John, the way I understand it with the colour is that when they reach sexual maturity they are rich black colour, as they age they go a dirty or shabby black and then really old bulls can go this caramel colour as opposed to the orange colouring of immature bulls and cows.

I know what you mean about the sambar.

Its amazing that hair color would change with age, other than to grey or lack of pigment. It goes against everything I learned in my live stock genetic's class. I would certainly love to hear more about it, do you know where on the web I could research it?

Bob - I can email you an article I wrote that has proper references and such. just shoot me an email office @ huntaust.com.au This article hasnt been published yet but if anyone else wants it just let me know.

John - The best sambar numbers are in the same general area where you shot your bull but more down to the coast (especially to the north). Actually you shot your bull on what is now the new concession where Mark went, although he was about 25k's or more away from the actual spot. Where he saw one of the stags was perhaps less than 10k.

Congrats again Mark!! Awesome bull and awesome images!!! A hunt to remember for sure!! and an historic hunt too - only the 4th hunter onto the new concession area (legally I mean )

I had been handloading some Woodleighs that gave great accuracy but at the last minute had a few misfires so grabbed some of the new Winchester factory loaded ammo with 286gr Power Points.
