Closed seasons on Poachers ?

I guess the anti-poaching efforts are becoming too successful

Kasese MPs Protest Killing of Poachers
The Monitor (Kampala)
March 21, 2003

Kennedy Lule
Kampala

Members of Parliament from Kasese have protested the killing of 350 suspected poachers in Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth national parks.

Ms Loice Bwambale, the chairwoman of Kasese MPs, wrote on Tuesday to the parliament committee on Trade and Industry asking the MPs to investigate the killings.

Mr Christopher Kibanzanga (Busongora South MP) on Wednesday told the committee that Parliament should ask the government to stop the killings immediately.

"Our people are tricked by undisciplined LDUs [Local Defence Unit personnel], UPDF soldiers and some game rangers who supply them with guns to enter the parks and be killed there," Mr Kibanzanga said.

Ms Bwambale alleged that the game wardens put rewards of between Shs 50,000 to Shs 250,000 on each poacher's head.

Ms Bwambale was reacting to The Monitor story of 17 March, which said 350 poachers have been killed in two years. The MPs said they do not condone poaching but said poachers should be arrested and prosecuted.

"Game rangers are supposed to disable poachers from fleeing by shooting them in the legs but not to kill them," Mr Kibanzanga said.

But Mr Peter Mutuluza (Mawokota North) and Mr Mutebi Kityo (Mawokota South) defended the killings, saying the game rangers sometimes act in self-defence.

Mr Kibanzanga rejected his colleagues' explanation and said rangers are trained to easily disarm poachers without killing them.

The Committee Chairman Mr Zachary Olum (Nwoya MP) said he has also received reports about killings in the Murchison Falls National Park.

The committee plans to summon Minister of Tourism Jovino Akaki and officials from Uganda Wildlife Authority in two weeks time.

KWS Ranger Suspended for Killing Poacher

The Nation (Nairobi)
20 March 2003

Nation Reporter
Nairobi

A Kenya Wildlife Service ranger has been interdicted over the killing of a young man in Kinangop, Environment minister Newton Kulundu said.

Dr Kulundu, responding to a question by Mr Mwangi Waithaka (Kinangop, Narc), said Mr Stephen Mwangi was shot dead at the Aberdares National Park, when rangers found him carrying the carcass of an antelope.

Dr Kulundu, who was reading a ministerial statement, said Mr Mwangi was shot after he defied an order to surrender and attacked the rangers with a machette.

He admitted that rangers also killed a Mr James Kihumba at the park last September, when they confronted a group of 18 people "who were preparing to load 400 cedar posts on a vehicle".

The minister said Kihumba also attacked a ranger with a machette.

Mr Waithaka accused the rangers of using excessive force in both incidents, and demanded to know why they could not immobilise the poachers instead. The minister said investigations were being carried out to determine whether the rangers were at fault.

In another matter, Dr Kulundu said his ministry was working on plans to allow communities living around national parks to benefit from their proceeds.

Responding to a question by Mr Marsden Madoka (Mwatate, Kanu), he said the government had collected more than Sh1.2 billion from the Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks in the last five years.

He said more than Sh12 million had been invested in projects for the community by KWS.

Mr Madoka sought to know how much of this revenue had been set aside to benefit the community.

Their first mistake was leaving witnesses. Dead men tell no tales.

Bet a few old scores get settled in the guise of anti-poaching tactics.
Very much like local people being 'apparently' killed by wild animals.
It happens a lot more than one thinks.

Whatever the reason or case Africa is Africa they don't call it the dark continent for nothing.

With that type of money on poachers heads I wouldn't be surprized if there was any bounty hunters around
