Eland measurements.
      #217551 - 04/10/12 12:28 AM

I'm trying to figure out if my Eland is large or average. Here are the measurements:

Left and right horn: 32"
Spread: 21"
Base circumference: 11"

I took a Cape Eland in 1999 with a longbow and wooden arrows. A really old bull, tip are quite blunt. It measured 27" both left and right with a 14" spread and base circumference is 10" I was told it was better than average. I would say you've got a good one.

I was assuming/hoping it was a Cape. No.1 SCI Cape is 47-ish. Of 250-some recorded, it is into the 170's before you get down to a 32" around the spiral.

RW for a Cape Eland is 35". I think yours is a good representative trophy. My personal opinion is that a trophy takes you back to your hunt and stir up all the memories. That is what it is all about. If you get a trophy that qualifies for the record books, that is an extra bonus. I personally do not have one single trophy that qualifies for the recordbooks, but I have a whole lot of memories.

Thou I have the books and measure lots of haeds ...... Agreed SAHUNT, inches mean little to me, the adventure is it.

Rowland Wards measures staright not around the curl, so a 35" RW is.......BIG.....45-50" around the spiral

Caprivi, All the tragilapius species are measured around the spiral and then straight up from where the spiral ends. The RW measurement is around the spiral. When I have time I will post a drawing of how the measurement must be taken. Measurement method B must be used.
