My seal hunting rifle.
      #216978 - 19/09/12 08:35 AM

As promised I will post some pictures of my seal hunting rifle and general "hard work" rifle. And it will not be pretty, so all of you guys looking forward to another gorgeous example of a rile, you are warned.

So here it comes..

It was originally built because I got a great deal on a 3-12*56 Meopta Meostar, and needed a rifle to put it on. I bought a used Remington 700 action, and got a couple of discarded barrels from some friends. The barrels are in 308 and 22-250, and it`s the 22-250 barrel that are currently in use. (I use the 308 for seals of course) The 22-250 barrel was cut down to 49 cm and I put a stainless steel Ase Utra moderator on it. 49 cm is not ideal for this calibre, but that`s what I wanted because of the moderator. And the moderator removes every bit of muzzle flash and works great for low light conditions.

The stock is a laminated one I also bought second hand, it did not fit me at all, so as you see I raised the comb quite crudely in the garage one evening with very little precision tools. It looks like shit, but works great. I also extended the stock to better suit me, and covered it up with gaffa tape. And to top it off I decided to paint it to make it look even worse. I used http://www.nfm.no/EC-Paint.html and it seems to hold up pretty good, but it does get worn off. But I got more spray in the cans I bought. This spray also works pretty good against rust.

But the best thing with this rifle is that it shoots extremely well, I`m not by any means a bench rest shooter, but it shoots .25 to .5 inch groups with all my different hunting loads.

The only add on I use when seal hunting is that I mount a Harris Bipod on it, I usually prefer shooting stix, but out after seal the bipod works best.

A useful and functioning tool, its the man behind them too!

They don't have to look pretty to deliver the goods,in fact many of the "pretty ones" don't do much delivery wise anyway.

Can you post some seal pics for us down under, thanks.

I don`t have many pictures, I always seem to forget my camera in the car or I destroy it. But I have one that I took with my cell phone. But it`s not pretty, so I don`t know how long it will be on photobucket before they delete it. But here it comes.

A seal shot at a 120 metres with a 150 grain soft point straight through the head. And no, the eyes does not usually look like that.

PB wont stop it,of course a head shot stops them on the spot,it would be a tough job retrieving them from the water otherwise.
Thanks for the post, its something we will never have down under.

No-one else has said it yet, so I will:

I'll bet Osama wished he had a Seal hunting rifle.

An ugly looking rifle but functional and I like it.
