Good old Vic.

I believe the story behind these charges (as told by one of the participants) are they (Vic, Dave and probably a few others) had a bet as to who could drop a Buffalo closest to where they were standing. I didn't get told who won !

That thing is really motoring along in the first pic.

I can't remember which gun he is carrying but I think
it is a 500 Nitro double.

Dave still has a habit of causing charges like that
(where someone else gets charged) so the fun still occurs !

Did he happen to mention what the "pucker factor" was for that buff?

On a scale of ten, that's got to be a 9.5!

Definitely 9.5 or above.

It's interesting, Vic looks like he is almost turning to run
before he has fired a shot. He has certainly set himself up for a quick exit !!!! (and I don't blame him having been in the exact same situation !)

Good photos. I have seen one for them before but not the sequence.

Good safari footwear too.

I think he fired before the first photo, and is already moving to jump away. The buffalo already looks to be on the way down to the ground in photo 1.

Ahhh.. at last the full sequence...
I don't think that Vic has the last 2 photos himself...
The first pix is well known and in Graheme Wright's book..

Photos were taken by Cal Carrick.. (inventer of the Bionic Arm for buff catching)

Gun is a 500 3"NE Evans IIRC..

Location was Adelaide River floodplains, not far from Scotts Creek?

I'll ask him tomorrow..

That's how I see it as well. Shot fired and rotating to move out of the way - note, even in the first picture he is dropping the rifle off his shoulder and moving to get out of the way of the dropping and probably rolling buffalo.

(Of course I give credits. :-)))

Thank you.

Love the photos, thanks for posting!!

Have seen the first black and white only and it seems that these have been coloured by hand or had some strange colouring treatment.

Brings back many memories of hunts at Scotts Creek; although we were mainly hunting boars with knives the dogs would bail/lug a buff in the thick stuff every now and then and things got....interesting.

Dr FM, you might be interested in getting yourself a copy of Graeme Wright's "Shooting the British Double Rifle". The man in the photos above, Vic Pedersen, is credited in that book for his gunsmithing skill (he is retired, pretty-much, these days). The first photo, in black-and-white, is in that book. Vic lives in Darwin, and you could try calling him on the telephone (he may or may not wish to talk).

Just talked on the phone to Vic and emailed a C & P of this thread, and asked him if he wants to write up anything for me to post here..
Will see what (if anything?) I get back, as he is not into "bragging", as he would see it...

He did say that the buffs momentum carried it on, and its arse-end went about 6-7 feet up in the air after the last photo.. Not quite a full sumersult..

Spinna, You know some of the 'Best' hunting oldies. Vic always seemed so 'Cool' whilst under pressure and was one hunter that always provided a good read.
