That would have been a very dangerous hunt, almost impossible to find the trophy

Fancy paying that sort of money or any money for a "Caged" animal. Sorry but the person who paid the money should have been the target sorry game

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I must have read a different article. The one above talked about a breeder bull, not a hunt????

Me to. I didn't see anything about shooting the bull. Just sold for breeding.

I read that as a breeding bull only.

Intention to breed back the giants, etc, etc.

South African buffalo sells for record $3.8 million
8:28 AM Wednesday Sep 5, 2012

A young buffalo bull with massive bowed horns sold at auction for a record 26 million rand (NZ$3.8 million), the South African Stud Breeders' Association said today

Owner Jacques Malan said the 4 years and 10-month-old bull called Horizon has horns measuring 1.3 metres long and a boss, or horn base, nearly 41 centimetres wide - a South African record for an animal that age.

"My main purpose is to breed back the old giants of the bush of Africa which have been hunted out over past centuries," Malan told The Associated Press from his Lumarie Game Farm in Bela Bela, north of the administrative capital of Pretoria.

Malan said he applies a knowledge of genetics garnered from his father since childhood and uses the same method in producing flowers. "Genetics (selection) stay the same, the principles stay the same, and I have applied it to wildlife as well as cattle and the flowers I produce," he said.

Horizon, who will be used for breeding, is a disease-free stud and so can also be used on a cattle farm without threat of contamination. The new owner

The association, which did not identify the new owner, said the buffalo is the most expensive wild animal ever sold in South Africa, the leading breeder on the continent.

Horizon was sold at a weekend auction, fetching 8 million rand ($1 million) more than the buffalo Senatla, which was sold last year.

"We knew that it's a special, special buffalo bull and we believed that it should have been the new record, price-wise. But you never know, so we are very delighted at this outcome," Malan said.

Found this image, but it is probably a "stock" imnage.

The bull in the article would certainly have immature soft bosses.

Hmmmm,
Maybe the next thing could be, when an exceptionally large trophy buff is taken, the first order will be to remove it's testicles and ice them immediately so the sperm can be used to breed more trophy stock in captive cows.
Don't know if that would be feasable of course. Maybe folks here with livestock breeding experience can comment.

Better trying to take the sperm and use it for AI.

Probably not a bad idea with some really big bulls to try to spread the genes.

After spending 35+ years in the artifical insemenation business, I can tell you removing the testes after death is done all the time to the really great bulls. I think collecting semen from a cape buffalo with huge horns like his would not only be difficult but close to impossible. getting him into a collection chute would be impossible. As I see it the only way it could be done is to dart him with a tranqulizer and use a "electro ejaculator" on him while his is out. There is just no way to confine an animal like that, without the collector putting his life in jeoparday. Bulls in AI have there horns removed for the saftey of the people handling them, then they put a ring in the nose and two lead ropes. A person one each side will lead him to a female in season or a collection dummy, when the bull starts to mount the collector moves in and redirects the penis (with his hand) into an artifical vagina. Not something I'd be willing to do with a cape buffalo, and I've collected my share of bulls.
Bob

At least tagged like that, they will have to remove the tags before shooting him as a "trophy bull" one day after years of captive breeding. Being cynical of course.

(I do know the tags will probably fall out after several years of rough treatment anyway too)
