Hi Claydog,
That is a very nice purchase. If you want more details on the rifle, do a close up of all the markings on the action and barrel.
Cheers,

Jeff There are no markings on either, i haven't removed the stock but it looks like there is a hatch pattern under the front mount. I assumed there was the Mauser name under there. i have been told it started out as a 7mm Mauser full wood but that is all I know.

Hi Claydog
Any particular reason for changing to .318? Just out of interest.

Rick Never really sat to well with me being a 308 , I have just bought a rigby in 275 so cant go back to that. Always wanted a 318. and thought this would be a nice rifle to do it on.

IMHO this style Mauser should have any of german origin calibers. Maybe 7x64 Brenneke..

Judging from the bolt handle, the bottom metal, fore-end checkering pattern, and the stock, the rifle may well have been a Mauser Model M Sporter with a full length Mannlicher style stock in caliber 6.5, 7, 8, or 9X57.
If it were mine, I would rebarrel it in caliber 9X57 with a 50 cm barrel turned to the original profile, and find someone to restore the stock to its original configuration. A magazine intended for 3.07" length cartridges will require lengthening to accomodate an 3.35" .318 Westley Richards. Caliber .358" bullets are much easier to come by than the .330" bullets used in the .318.

No idea of the history. Magazine box seems to be standard length though ie it fits a 30/06 round so should convert to 318 easily enough, 9 x 57 would be a good option.

Yes I agree with Igorrock and Xausa it would be sweet in a German based calibre and 9x57 would be my choice. But hey just my 2 cents worth.

Nice rifle for what you want. I think a .318 WR would make a useful calibre change from a boring .308, especially the 250 gr Woodleigh and 180 and 250 gr Bertram projectiles available here in Australia. The 250 gr loadings would be cool for you for scrub bull and buffalos in the Territory. Brass is available from Bertram and also .30-06 brass can be reformed.
The ebony or horn fore-end is not very German looking. The mounts look like a modern recent addition, probably here in Aust - Weaver mounts, Leupold or something like that.
That rifle definitely has a chunky trigger guard.

Those buffalo horn trigger guards are quite usual in older german/austrian made rifles and drilling. Especially before WWII.
