James Woodward 303 Automatic
      #213508 - 27/07/12 06:12 AM

Here are some pics of my James Woodward 303 similar to CptCurl's, made in Aug of 1897 nitro proofs
of 38 grs rifleite w/ 215 gr bullet.
Purdey records state the gun was made for Dr. W. Seward Webb:his info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Seward_Webb

This has a bolted top safety as seen here:

Fine English scroll engraved side locks:

Makers Name:

File cut top rib w/Maker's name and address, and "The Automatic"

Snap action lever:

I took the side locks off, flooded with oil to dissolve the "dust" as in this pic. I wiped and brushed the side locks to get most of the oil off. I especially lubed the tumbler projections where
the snap lever cocks the tumblers.

You've got to love that action.

It is the one action I would like to own but don't.

A marvelous rifle in a wonderful caliber. Thanks for posting it.

I moved this thread to the Double Rifle Photos & Archive forum, where it will be better appreciated.

Beautiful rifle, too bad people don't know to use the correct screw driver!!! But that can be fixed.

BTW, they are called TURN SCREWS, not screw drivers !!!

The problem is, people use screw drivers and not a correctly filed down to size and flat ended Turn Screw.

I loaded 41.5 grains of H-4350 over Fed LR primers and topped with Woodies 215 grain .312 bullets.
The load should clock about 2000 fps., I was looking for a load that was used when the rifle was made, 1897 38 gr. rifleite was prior to cordite.

Here is the best target shot over front only sand bags at 50 yards using the fixed 100 yd V.

1st shot I held on the X and hit 4" high slightly left with the right barrel. The dime.

2nd thru 6th I held at 6 o'clock and hit 3 Xs and 2 10s. Here is the target:

A .303 double is to be cherished. Congratulations on the shooting success.

Not fair you and Chasseur are having all the fun. But next week he will be visiting my shooting range for some fun with doubles!
