Guns from India Markings
      #213134 - 21/07/12 06:23 AM

I have seen in the last 2 days 2 English rifles who each have the number "10" stamped in the bottom of the wooden stock behind the pistol grip. Below the "10" there is a 3 digit number on one and a 2
digit number on the other one. The numbers are very small and the rifles are a Webley 1902 single
shot and a Dougall double rifle. I once owned an English double rifle that also had numbers stamped on the bottom of the stock and a friend of mine who has since passed away said that the numbers on that gun meant that it came from Bikaner. My question is: Are these small numbers indeed indicative of guns coming from India. If so, what region of India would the number "10" indicate. I am guessing that the "10" indicates a region in India and the numbers below the "10" indicate a
running total of the guns coming from that region.

Thanks,
Larry

Such markings were sometimes stamped on the stocks of the guns which were deposited/confiscated by the district police departments -for various reasons- and kept in their police armory till the case is being decided.

Panther,

Do you happen to know how what numbers apply to a specific district in India?

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry,
No, unfortunately there's no way to find out the place of origin through the police markings. As far as I've searched and came to know these were at the local level (district or state) of police & courts, used for identification purpose. The markings goes like: the FIR/case number & the year.
