You would have to know ele very well to let them come as close as some of those got. In particular the one at the 18-21 sec mark was past what I would have thought was the go-no go point.

I'm afraid I'd have pulled the trigger on that one cow, for sure. Yikes!

Of course, in the police/video secenarios, I shot the deaf guy reaching for his deaf/dumb card in his right hand back pocket as he quickly walked towards me. Some peace officers here may have done the same - HA! As I walked to the firing line, our instructor said, "oh, this guy's doesn't stand a chance". I didn't realize he was setting me up to shoot an unarmed 'perp'.

Obviously, the cow was bluffing, a deep bluff- & they 'talked' her out of it. Amazing.

If you look closely at the 18 second charge, the Cow was retrieving it youngster. Still a close call.

IMHO I see no solution for these ladies being so truculent. Estimations are 100 000 to 150 000 elephants in Zimbabwe (depends on seasonnal migrations from Botswana due to drought). Hunters shoot about 800 eles per year, what's by far unsubstantial. The population is escalading too fast. Add it the shrinking of the habitats, the disturbances caused by hunters but mainly by more and more ecotourists that night and days are scouting the strongholds where the eles are supposed to have some relative quietness. Add it that locals are peppering (with good reasons) with any whynots the famished eles devastating their plots
And you have made a detonnating cocktail.
For the few I have seeen there, I have noticed that treading on a dry sticks have the eles a kilometer around are fucking off. But should you come as close as 20 or 30 m from the herd and the war is afoot.
In Mozambique it was even clearer. You just have to ride and any herd close by would rush and chase the car.
I see 3 reasons :
elephant overpopulation (not so in Moz)
human overpopulation
solid disturbances
and marginally rampant poaching.
As an ele is living 50 years, early in its life he would be orphaned, peperred by locals, maybe by poachers, let alone warfare in Moz, and no mystery that most of the eles have registred cumulative bad experiences from contacts with humans.
On an other hand bulls not in charge with totos look for a hermitlike life and would most of the time decamp from any human caused trouble.

Have a look at the elephant in the Zambezi Valley, most have leaking glands.

I was told when visiting Addo that a elephant which had leaking glands was stressed and could be more aggressive. Almost none of the elephant in Addo had leaking glands, the opposite to the Zambezi Basin. The ele cows in the valley are known for being 'cheeky' ie aggressive. Even in Hwange Park there were a lot of incidents which are never reported, tourist cars being swatted etc.

Lots of human interaction in the Zambezi Valley, villagers, wood cutters, poachers, grass cutters, farmers, hunters, culling, subsistence farmers, people are everywhere.

A good topic for discussion I think.
