Mauser redo
      #212630 - 14/07/12 01:26 AM

Some time ago I came into two commercial 98s that were in need of some major tlc. Both had a great deal of corrosion on the barrels and actions etc. They worked out better than expected and I am going to give some unsolicited props to Mark Lee express blue. Good stuff, easy to work with (although not quite as dark as I was hoping).

I didn't refinish the bolt on the top rifle. It wasn't matching and was originally color cased.

It also had a rear sight installed that was far from correct so until I can cut a base and drop in a broomhandle sight it will probably stay the way it is. The lyman bolt release sight is kind of cool though.

Bottom metal

Nice treat to find the platinum wire sight.

Sorry about the crappy pix.

Still need to refinish the stock on the big rifle, the horn self distructed and needs to be rebuilt.
Not trying to fool anyone. The reblack is obvious and there is still some scattered pitting that I blued over as the amount of metal that would have had to come off would have been substantial. At least they are closer to original than to what they had been left to.
Cheers

Tom

NECG sells german-made RECKNAGEL sight. I´m sure you can find there one which is correct to your rifles style.

Hey Tom - nice rifles and good work, I have a couple that are a bit like yours probably were before you got started.

How about telling us what they are chambered in, when they were made (folks here will tell you from the serial if you don't have the reference books)etc.

6.5x54 Kurz
This is the link to the smaller of the two and 30-06
is the link to the 30-06 that was in far poorer condition.
Overall a good lesson in hopefully how to do things right without the Bubba factor rearing its ugly head.
thank you for the kind words.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing these pictures. Hope to see hunting pics with these beautiful rifles in the future.

Good hunting!
