404 rebore?
      #211935 - 03/07/12 02:27 AM

I have a lh m70 375 H&H that i love and probably won't be hunting any DG
unless I win the lottery.
Should I have it rebored to 404j?
I'll admit I like the idea of having my name engraved on the barrel.
And I already have an ultramag mag box.
Talk me out of it.

Re-bored & re-chambered or re-barreled & chambered to .404?

Any reason for .404 Jef. other than your name?

What would you use it for? Would it better suit for deer, elk and bear than the .375?

Just because, is OK by me - sometimes that's all the reason necessary in a free world.

Rebored/rechambered I think the barrel is fat enough.
The 404 is as good as any other 40 although 400H&H sounds pretty good to me as well.
Brass and bullets would be easier to get.
I wouldn't use a 40 to sharpen my critical thinking skills thats for sure.

And on that note it's time to pour a bunch of H4350 into some 375 brass.

Happy canada day

make sure you don't put the cart before the horse. Find out if anyone is willing to re drill the barrel.

Most of the time you need a decent step up in caliber to re drill a barrel as a gun drills oil hole needs to contact steel so as the chips can be flushed out. You will have do get some measurements of 404 drill and see if the 375 hole is small enough to cover the oil hole. the only way around this is to plug the 375 barrel with a press fit rod = more money.

Another thing is barrelmakers are set up to drill rifle blanks generally of 1.25" and they are profiled to size after. To set up a barrel that is already profiled could be a time consuming job as well as a break down of their process - more expensive then just buying a new barrel.

I would just by a 404 barrel.

Tom.

Hi,

You have the "Queen" of Africa already and have a very good range of projectiles. With the 270grn you have a light 'Deer' slayer load or go up to the 300gn Soft or Solids and it will take all bar Elephant. The P.H. is the one to have the 'Dinosaur' slayer with the high cost of bullets at the moment, this is what he is paid BIG money for.

However, if you insist on a .404 Jeffery then do as Tom has suggested and get yourself a new barrel which can be provided in the same profile and will just need the tender touches of a qualified gunsmith to complete the job.

Good Luck, Personally I would stick with the "Queen" of Africa.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

I would vote for a new barrel. The 404 is a good choice IMHO if you want to go larger than 375H&H.

Agree, putting on a new barrel is easier and cheaper.

404 good choice.

Since I saw a pic of a Ruger 375 rebored to 404 here in Canada it's been on my mind.
As its a bit of a day dream I havent made any inquires as to the cost or difficulties.
By comparison a new bbl installed/blued and the sights installed will eat up most of $1000.00.

G'Day Fella's,

Terlingua, Why not make your M70, a switch barrel?
Get another barrel (with the same exterior profile of you .375), in .404 Jeff and switch between them???

Just a thought

Doh!
