Bob Irwin, enough said.

"If the shooters knew anything about how nature works, they'd know the really big boys keep everything in check," he said. "You shoot out the big males and the teenagers will start running around testing their skills.

"If you get young ones running riot, it's going to introduce a little more risk to everything as far as humans are concerned.""

The younger one's run around anyway trying to knock off the big one's, or at least the food - until the big one comes along. And then if the younger one has the balls, a fight might ensue.

There maybe an element of truth is what he says, although his motives are opposed to ours.

There was a recent TV doco about elephants being trans-located into Pilensberg National park RSA and a lot of suspicious rhino deaths began to occur. National parks rangers found that the lack of mature bulls had unbalanced the social order and it was adolescent male elephants doing the killing.

There is no doubt that the croc. pop. in NT and Qld has grown. An holistic approach to entire croc population management would work allowing trophys to be taken.

I don't mind Bob Irwin. He was working with crocs for financial gain long before his son gained popularity.

Tophet

Agree, some truth to it, and remember the Elephant situation.

I think in one of them they put in Big mother's to control the situation.

Re crocs, fights still occur as young one's try to knock off big one's. When feeding crocs, we see one particular male that tries to show it's dominance and pushes the issue a bit until the really big one comes along. We are expecting the really big one to eventually get knocked off - in fact a few years ago I spent a few hours looking for his floating body as it was thought he had been killed.

Are the Ausie crocs as well liked for food, as the American aligators seem to be?

I do enjoy some of the grandstanding on Swamp People! Troy Landry is a favourite with his "Shoot 'im Liz, shoot 'im", but Liz is one fine looking lady & that young lady she has with her now!

I think that might be a fun "Guided Fishing Trip" to book! Perhaps someone will do that or start tht up, in the future. I think it'd be a blast. Just a 'shootin' gaters'.

I don't think that many people eat Croc here in Aus.

Re Swamp People, I wouldn't be doing what they do with a croc on the end of the line - a different kettle of fish IMHO and likely to get your hand / arm bitten off or you pulled into the water and turned into a roll mop !!!

I ate some crododile once. It reminded me of frogs' legs - which are a bit like eating neoprene.

TKs guys - wondered about the frogs-legs - I ate a LOT of those back in Ontario - wonderful fried in butter - tender and sweet. They were from the common Bull Frog of North America, I'd assume.

John - there's a big difference between those 6 to 12 foot gaters and a big croc - but the little ones should work similarly.

Last show, they got a couple pushing 12 feet - looked pretty good.

Strange! I was watching a documentary on on what was causing Croc attacks around Darwin. Seems the big old boys beat up the yonger males who then move out looking for their own territory and move into close settled areas.

From what I gather if you get rid of the dominante male the younger ones move about outside their territory less.

Sooner or later, the best 'locations/areas/dominions' are "taken", but the most powerful, ie; dominant male which causes the younger gators/crocs/trout/bass/pigs/grounghogs/gophers/wolves/deer/bears or moose to locate further from the best locations/areas/dominions. That's nature. As man spreads out into the 'wilds', he comes into contact with more and more 'wild things' or visa-vis.

Rule303

I would say a whole load of factors come into play.

Size of water hole, can they actually get to another water hole without dying (not that that seems to stop them from trying based on the number of dead one's found in the middle of flood plains), amount of food available.

That's why effective management of the whole population needs to be done if the trophy crocs are taken. The younger females and males need to be thinned out as well. Just like with deer or any game species.

John, to me that is how management of any wild animal should be done.

From reading the aborigina; use to hunt crocs, but it would of only been the small to mid size that they would of taken, seeing as they were on bark rafts or dugout canoes.

Probably because the Abs didn't make it back to land and became dinner for the croc !!! LOL

16 footer would crush a bark raft without batting an eyelid !

10 foot is one he mentions plus a whole load (11) dead crocs on the flood plain from moving out due to territorial problems.

.

I eat crocodile a lot. In fact the dog is going to get some tonight. While away from home it went off in the fridge. So instead of croc eating dog, dog will eat croc. But he will probably turn up his nose at it, being a spoilt gourmet dog!

As in eating croc "a lot", that means several times per year, maybe every couple of months.

Croc would be eaten a lot more, if we could go out and harvest our own ourselves. Fill up the engel freezer for the trip home. If people do it, and they don't have deep sun tans, generally it is kept quiet. I heard once, using a spear gun can be fun ....

No reason there should not be a legal croc season with tags available for purchase. Stuff this Abo BS all the time, ie provide money for the Abos ... those of us without the deep sun tans also are citizens. Stop the black racism ie pandering to the blacks and preferential treatment, in this country.

Bib Irwin is a complete fuckwit. As the rest of that name and breed. Every time corc hunting comes up, one of these Irwin rejects and retards springs up looking for publicity for their bullshit zoo. Completely commercially orientated, them wanting to make money, is why they try to stop croc hunting.

The Sting Ray did Australia a good deed in my opinion, and I said so in South Africa back when it happened. Three or four more sting rays wouldn't go astray ...

I best describe it as "fishy chicken".

But the flavour or perception of it can change from dish to dish, or time to time.

First had crocodile back in 1986, Aussie Saltwater croc. The same year I think the movie "Crocodile Dundee" came out. Then a couple of years later, had some Nile Crocodile in Kenya, and again some more in Botswana.

Ha ha, a joke, what makes croc taste like pork?

I wonder if there is a difference between Aussie salties and freshwater crocs in flavour?

Yes your comments regarding the documentary make a lot more sense and realistic behaviour than Bob Irwin's complete bullshit.
