Couple of Boars this arvo
      #210980 - 16/06/12 08:58 PM

Walked a few k's around the swamp edge this arvo. Bit of sign and was about to turn around and head back when I spotted some egrets feeding. Moved closer expecting to find some pigs. One lone boar up to his belly in water feeding on alli-aceris dulus. Decided to shoot for a pass thru behind the shoulder so he would make it back to dry land . 145gr 7mm passed thru and he came back towards me. Put Mak( weimeraner) onto him as he trotted into the paperbarks, Mak had a chew after he went down. Set him up for some pics then decided to move on a bit further.
Had just made it to where I shot the boar from and another boar walked from the deeper water towards us and started feeding at around 35m. Wanted to shoot him so he would exit the water as well so waited for him to offer a clear shot. Got Mak to sit and wait. Watched him feed for a couple of minutes then he scented us, head up and alert he turned and headed back out into the reeds. Shoulder shot him and he dropped on the spot. The winchester 145gr factory exited his neck. got fairly wet getting him set up for some pics. Im very happy with the performance of the featherweight in 7x57.
Heres some pics Mick
First boar.

You seemed to have a good day out once again. That featherweight in 7x57 is quite ideal to that kind of hunting I think.

Is shooting them behind the shoulder to save you from getting wet or to minimise time in possible Croc territory?

Ozhunter- Both , didnt want to do the long walk back with wet boots and pants. Crocs are always on your mind so I stay out of the water if I can. Also try to keep the dog out of the water as well. Its very hard in the goose season when retrieving birds. Try to pick spots that are croc friendly.
Gryph - the factory ammo winchester stuff is doing the job fine only projectiles ive recovered have been shoulder shots , projectiles have broken up but through a lot of bone so not that worried. All dropped on the spot.
Its been cold up here for the last few weeks. Had to break out a jumper for work the other morning. It got down to 9c over night, still 30c during the day. Good to see the dry season here. Cheers Mick

Good bit of exercise. Being in crock water gives you a real good cardio work out

Mick, love your work, good shooting and good pic's.
