.340 Weatherby Mag

G'Day Fella's,

A couple of years back, I purchased a Mk V Weatherby rifle in .340.
It had a cracked stock (from a fall) and needed refinishing as the bluing was patchy from carrying.
Anyway, I recently replaced the stock with a www.hightech-specialties.com and pillar bedded & bedded this to the rifle then fitted a Pachmayr XLT recoil pad (The Pussy Pad).
I also Cerakoted the stock and all the metal work.

I had done some initial Ladder Testing of loads in previous weeks and had fired loads that were 2.0 Grains OVER Maximum Recommended Powder Charge! These loads had absolutely NO measured indications or signs of excessive pressure and extracted as normal!

I was recently away bush and had the opportunity to chronograph some loads for this rifle, the details of this combo, are as follows;
26" Factory Barrel
Weatherby cases
CCI .250 Magnum primers
Hornady .338", 200grain Spire Point bullets
and
Reloader 22 powder.
@ 10 Degrees C or 50F

With a powder charge of 94 grains of Reloader-22 (92grains is the Max Recommended Powder Charge), I received the following velocities;

3218 fps
3216 fps
3210 fps
3194 fps
3184 fps

Max= 3218fps
Min= 3184 "
ES = 34 "
M/Ave= 3204 "
Std Dev= 14 "

In this cartridge rifle combo, 3200 fps is apparently the normal achievable velocity, so.....!!!

The reason I initially started on this rifle "Project", was to develop a load in this rifle that would simulate a 250 grain bullet, from a .338 Lapua cartridge. This was to test some of the Firearm Accessories, that I design and manufacture. But recently, it appears that a Rem 700 MLR rifle (in .338 Lapua) that I have in storage for a mate/customer, has become available, so.......!

Doh!

A 340 always seem to be "250grain" cartridge for me. My normal go-to test load is 86grs 7828ssc in WBY brass with a Fed 215 primer. The 250 Nosler/Swift/TSX will do wonderfully in it.

That said, my first ever Weatherby Mark V was a .340Laser. I bought a few 210gr factory loads in it, one .40cal ragged hole. It would throw them into one hole as long as you could stand to sit behind it. I saved up and bought a big pile of that same ammo, same lot number.

I like this cartridge . For me it is a " 250grs cartridge " too . My load is 83grs R22 and a 250grs SPBT bullet from SIERRA . I use it for hunting elk sized deers and Ibex at long range in the mountain .

My first weatherby I had in my hand(not mine) was a .340Weatherby EuroMark. Ever since I have been looking for a similar rifle. One day it pops up I am sure.

It should become no problem to duplicate a .338Lapua factory ballistics in a .340Wea round. As Ross Seyfried said(wrote): " If you canīt do it with a .340Wea you might not want to have it done anyway".

It's right , you can duplicate the ballistic of a 338 LAPUA hunting rifle with a barrel of 26" , but not the ballistic of the same cartridge in a heavy sniper rifle with a barrel of 29" to 30" .
